Local law enforcement now has the backing of a state statute when it comes to complaints of dog owners and loose dogs.
The Starke County Commissioners will receive an update from County Attorney Marty Lucas about the state statute governing loose dogs and dog bites. Commissioner Kathy Norem brought the idea of updating the county’s ordinance on loose dogs at a meeting in April after receiving several calls about unrestrained, vicious dogs.
The Starke County Commissioners will soon revamp the county’s dog ordinance to put responsibility on owners to keep track of their pets.
A few residents attended the Hamlet Town Council meeting this week to complain about the number of loose dogs in town.
The complaints are an extension from a February meeting where two residents reported their concerns about dogs that appear to be vicious. They don’t feel safe around their homes with the dogs hanging around the neighborhoods.
