Teenagers Escape from Detention Center

Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies and Plymouth Police Department officers are looking for two escapees from a secure detention center in southern Indiana.

According to Marshall County officials, Kody Whiteman and Adam Waggoner, both age 17, escaped the detention center in the early morning hours of Aug. 3 and reportedly stole a vehicle. Officers in Marshall County recovered the stolen vehicle in West Township on Aug. 5. On Aug. 6, deputies investigated two reports of theft where items were taken from two vehicles in the area where the stolen car was recovered.

Driver Arrested after Accident Investigation

 
 

A Tennessee driver was arrested after a two vehicle accident in Marshall County Saturday night.

Marshall County sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection of State Road 8 and State Road 17. John Halloway, 48, of Chattanooga, Tennessee told police that he saw two vehicles traveling south on State Road 17 pull into the turn lane to continue west onto State Road 8. He told officers that he did not see a motorcycle behind those cars and pulled out into the intersection, according to the police report. Halloway stated that he struck the motorcycle on the right side and caused it to fall.

Marshall County Detectives Investigating Thefts

 
 

Detectives with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department are looking for information into two recent theft incidents.

It was between June 30 and July 9 when unknown person(s) gained entry into a NIPSCO substation at 18881 15th Road and took a large amount of copper wire and connectors. Three storage units were also damaged and it believed the same person caused the destruction.

Divers Recover Body from Lake Maxinkuckee

 
 

Indiana Conservation Officers and the Marshall County Coroner are investigating the death of a 28-year-old man whose body was recovered by divers in Culver’s Lake Maxinkuckee Friday night.

The man, Jose Cruz Lizcano-Fernandez, of Logansport, was last seen swimming at the Culver Public Beach and was reported missing four to five hours later, according to a news release from the DNR.  Divers from the Indiana Conservation Office assisted in the search while using “side scan sonar” to locate him.  His body was recovered within 30 minutes of the initial call and was located approximately 15 feet outside of the swim area at Culver Public Beach in about five feet of water.

Marshall County Operation Pull-Over Blitz Leads to 70 Citations

 More than half of the citations issued by patrolmen from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department during a recent “Click It or Ticket” blitz were for seatbelt violations. The stepped-up enforcement took place between May 9th and June 1st and concentrated on seatbelt and child safety seat violations. Patrolmen issued a total of 70 tickets, and 37 were for seatbelt violations. They also handed out 13 speeding tickets and made three criminal misdemeanor and one criminal felony arrest.

Sunday Morning Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

A traffic stop just before 1 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 31 north of 4A Road in Marshall County ended with the arrest of a man police say was driving under the influence with two children in the vehicle. Jihad A. Muhammad failed several field sobriety tests, according to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. It notes officers could smell burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and found a baggie of possible pot inside the car. Muhammad refused a certified chemical test. He faces charges of operating while intoxicated – endangering, which is a class D felony, as well as possession of marijuana under 30 grams and driving while suspended-prior. The children were released at the scene to their mother.

Two Injured in Accident

 
 

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department responded to an injury accident this morning at U. S. 6 and 106 West where two drivers were injured and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Police found that a driver traveling east on U.S. 6 attempted to turn onto State Road 106 West and reportedly turned into the path of another driver, according to the news release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. One driver was trapped inside the car.

South Bend Woman Arrested after Traffic Stop

A traffic stop initiated by an officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department resulted in the arrest of the driver.

Ashley Turner’s vehicle was pulled over Wednesday night on U.S. 31 near the intersection of 1st Road. The officer reportedly found marijuana, a substance believed to be methamphetamine and a controlled substance. The officer believed that Turner may be under the influence of a controlled substance.

Man Died of Accidental Drowning

 
 

The body of a man was found in the Yellow River Thursday evening.

An autopsy to find the cause of death was conducted Friday. The preliminary cause of death is accidental drowning.

Kayakers notified the Plymouth Police Department on Thursday evening that they found a body in the Yellow River by Oakhill Avenue in Plymouth. The deceased man was recovered by the effort of officers from the Plymouth Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Conservation officers, Plymouth Fire Department, and the Marshall County Coroner.

Marshall County Man Faces Intimidation Charge

A Marshall County man spent the night in jail after allegedly brandishing a firearm at his wife in front of their child during an argument. Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department arrested David A. Tanner, 46, on a charge of intimidation with a deadly weapon. His wife called the police just after 11 p.m., according to a news release from the sheriff’s department. Deputies say Tanner admitted possessing a toy firearm. His bond was set at $1,500. Tanner is due in Marshall Superior Court on July 22nd.

Stolen Vehicle Wrecked in St. Joseph County

 
 

An early morning joyride in a pickup truck reported stolen from a Plymouth residence ended with a crash in St. Joseph County. The owner of the white 1996 Ford F-350 pickup truck called Marshall County Dispatch early this morning to report it stolen from a lot in Gatewood Mobile Home Park on U.S. 31 in Plymouth. Thefts from Vehicles Reported in Marshall County

 
 

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department detectives are investigating several thefts from vehicles that occurred between late Thursday night to early Friday morning.

Several vehicles between the 12000 to 14000 block of Nataka Trail were gone through with items stolen and the same can be said for vehicles in the 14000 block of Lawrence Lake Trail and in the 12000 block of Diamond Drive.

Intoxicated Driver Arrested in Marshall County

 
 

A Fort Wayne man was recently arrested under the suspicion of driving his vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance.

James Krout, 40, was pulled over by Marshall County police on U.S. 30 near the intersection of Pioneer Drive and during the course of the traffic stop officers believed that Krout was under the influence. Officers also found that Krout’s Driver’s License was suspended in a lifetime forfeiture.

Father and Son Face Meth Charges in Marshall County

A father and son face drug charges in Marshall County following a traffic stop late Tuesday night on U.S. 31 near U.S. 6. The driver, Marshall Smith Sr., 52, of Mishawaka was believed to be under the influence of a controlled substance, according to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. The passenger, Marshall Smith Jr., 28, was reportedly found to be in possession of synthetic marijuana. Officers detained both men and searched the vehicle. That’s when they reportedly found more than three grams of what appeared to be methamphetamine packaged for resale. Both men were arrested. Marshall Smith, Sr. faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, operating a vehicle while intoxicated controlled substance, dealing and possession of more than three grams of methamphetamine. Marshall Smith, Jr. was charged with possession of marijuana with a prior charge, dealing and possession of more than three grams of methamphetamine. Bond was set at $20,000 cash. Formal charges are pending with the Marshall County Prosecutors Office.

 

Teenage Driver Injured in Single Vehicle Crash

 

 
 

A 16-year-old from Plymouth was treated at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Marshall County after he rolled his sport-utility vehicle Monday morning. Michael Slitter was northbound on Pine Road north of 5th Road and lost control of his 2003 Chevrolet Blazer, according to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. The SUV landed on its top. Slitter told the officer he swerved to avoid hitting a deer.
