The Indiana Department of Transportation is getting ready for winter. The agency is teaming up with WorkOne of northwest Indiana to hire seasonal maintenance crew members and snow plow drivers. Culver Man Sentenced in Reckless Homicide Case
A Culver man was sentenced on Wednesday after pleading guilty to a charge of Reckless Homicide.
54-year-old Jon McFarland was charged following a Grand Jury indictment from December of 2014. It alleges that on October 12th of that year, McFarland was a driver in an automobile crash that occurred at the intersection of U.S. 31 and State Road 10 near Argos.

Area Counties See Declines in Unemployment
Unemployment in Starke County declined slightly from July to August, according to the latest job numbers released by the state. All but one county saw decreases in unemployment rates. Starke County dropped from 5.8 to 5.5 percent. That’s still higher than the state average unemployment of 4.6 percent or the national 5.1 percent jobless figure. Continue reading

Culver Town Council Brings Budget to First Reading
The Culver Town Council has taken a step toward adopting their 2016 budget.
During last night’s meeting, a public hearing was held to review the document that will determine expenditures for the next year. As things stand, Culver sees modest increases in spending for its police and fire department budgets. The biggest jump was a projected $100-thousand increase in EMS expenses.

“Tar Spot” Fungus Identified in Northern Indiana Fields
A corn disease not previously reported in the United States has been spotted in northern Indiana.
Plant pathologists say “tar spot” is a fungal disease that develops brown lesions on the corn leaf. Black ascomata later appear, protruding from the leaf. The structures produce spores which spread the “tar spot” fungus.

Indiana Sees Rise in Deer Collision Odds
A major insurance company says Indiana drivers are 21-percent more likely to hit a deer than there were last year.
State Farm Insurance says this is the second straight year Indiana has seen the increase. Data is developed using the company’s claims and driver counts from the Federal Highway Administration.

FEMA Denies Disaster Assistance Request, Pence Orders Appeal
Gov. Mike Pence has directed the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to pursue an appeal after FEMA denied the state’s request for federal disaster assistance for 19 counties affected by flooding in June and July. That list of counties includes Pulaski, Marshall and Fulton. Assistance would have provided grants to government and nonprofit agencies. Continue reading
Culver Businesses to Close by September’s End
The owner of two businesses in Culver says it’s an exciting, but also a sad time.
George Pesek, owner of Corndance Cafe and Evil Czech Brewery in Culver, announced to employees on Thursday that both locations would be closing before the end of September. Pesek says he opened similar locations in Mishawaka, the demand for which has been relatively large compared to Culver.
