The Culver School Board finalized a policy for the use of metal detectors Monday. Superintendent Karen Shuman says the three handheld metal detectors the school corporation received from the state will simply be another tool for administrators to use for a potential search.
The Culver School Board is expected to finalize a policy on the use of metal detectors tonight. The school corporation received three handheld metal detectors, as part of the state’s program to provide them free of charge to Indiana’s schools. The proposed policy stipulates that the devices may only be used by school administrators in cases where there is reasonable suspicion, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman.
The Culver Community Schools Corporation is the latest to consider a policy on the use of handheld metal detectors.

New metal detectors have arrived at the West Central School Corporation. Last week, the school board finalized a policy update when it comes to how they’ll be used, according to Superintendent Don Street. “I think it’s important to note that the handheld metal detectors are designed for individual searches based on reasonable suspicion,” he says.
Back in July, Governor Eric Holcomb announced that handheld metal detectors would be provided to public, private and charter schools at no cost as one element of the state’s comprehensive approach to bolster school safety efforts. North Judson-San Pierre was one of more nearly 370 Hoosier schools that requested metal detectors, based on a metal detectors UK report.
