Nearly five years after the partial collapse of the
Sportsman’s Bar and Grill, what’s left of the structure continues to cause
headaches for the Town of Monterey. The town council recently sent a letter to
the Pulaski County Commissioners.
Monterey has officially called off its
town convention. With no contested races this year, the town council
passed a resolution Monday, formally stating that no convention will
be held, according to Council President Doug Denton.
With less than a week left for
candidates to file to run in the May primary, many incumbents remain
unopposed. As of Friday afternoon, the only local contested race was
for Knox clerk-treasurer. Colleen Hodge and Cyndi Mann-Kidder are
vying for the Democratic Party nomination, according to the Starke
County Clerk’s Office. Incumbent Jeff Houston is not seeking another
term.

A new fence around a collapsed building in downtown Monterey should be in place by this evening. Monterey Town Councilman Doug Denton says the Pulaski County Building Inspector advised a chain link-type fence will be placed around the rubble from the former Sportsman’s Lounge at the southeast corner of Main and Walnut Streets.
