When the North Judson-San Pierre School Board met last week they received a project report from Edward Sawa, the construction administrator of Fanning Howey.
Sawa has been working closely with Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin and Maintenance Director Wilbur Collins to determine the specifics of current capital projects. Last Tuesday Sawa informed board members of some the key preliminary findings from some onsite investigations.
At last night’s North Judson-San Pierre School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin provided board members with a brief update about a current project that is nearing completion and another project that will be addressed in the near future.
First, she alerted board members that the pool repairs are nearly complete. Employees with the company Buddenbaum & Moore Commercial Pool Services have finished replacing the faulty main drain boxes and pipes have been set. She said this week they are re-tiling. North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said that planned renovations to the school’s swimming area will still be done in the spring as planned but they must deal with an unforeseen issue first.
Dr. Zupin stated that Maintenance Director Wilbur Collins noticed something wrong with the pool that required an immediate repair.
“The main drain boxes are really corroded.” Zupin said, “They corroded and that was what was allowing the dirt and the water to get into the pool which is what Mr. Collins saw with discoloration, so we needed to replace the main drain boxes.” Continue reading
The quarterly enrollment report for North Judson-San Pierre was discussed during the NJSP School Board meeting on Tuesday. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said the enrollment stayed pretty consistent with the Average Daily Membership count that was taken back in September, which was around 1,030 students.
Superintendent Zupin stated that she has been keeping a close eye on enrollment trends since last year. This year the elementary school had 46 student withdrawals. Dr. Zupin broke that down into specific categories; 1 student left to be home-schooled, another left for virtual schooling and 35 students moved out of the district.
The superintendent said the remaining 9 elementary students still live within the district but their parents chose to have them transferred. Dr. Zupin broke that down even more, stating that three transferred to Knox, two went to Eastern Pulaski Schools, two left to go to St. Peter’s Lutheran School and one more transferred to West Central.
She went on to describe the report from the Jr./Sr. High School where 41 students withdrew.
North Judson-San Pierre Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin had a plethora of project updates to provide to the school board when they met Tuesday night.
Dr. Zupin informed the board that although they won’t be receiving money from their lease rental bonds until January, plenty of preliminary work has been done so far. She stated that quotes are out for the bathroom partition replacement portion of the project and she anticipates that work to be completed over Christmas Break while students are out of the building. The North Judson-San Pierre Teacher’s Master Contract was ratified by the teacher’s association on Thursday of last week and received board approval during the NJSP school board meeting on Tuesday night.
Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin stated that the contract is a 2 year agreement which will be retroactive to the beginning of this school year. She shared that some of the highlights include that the beginning teacher base pay was raised to $35,000.
Dr. Zupin said that a two percent increase was applied to existing teacher salaries. She went on to thank the teachers, “They’ve been patient through our financial issues and they are here because they are loyal and committed to North Judson-San Pierre so they deserve what we were able to work together to accomplish.” Continue reading
The Indiana Department of Education does an annual student count in schools and their findings are used to determine state funding. When the average daily membership count took place at North Judson-San Pierre on Friday, September 15th, the ADM count was 1,031 students. Superintendent Dr. Annette Zupin said that for the first time in about 10 years, the school corporation saw an increase in their enrollment figures. Continue reading
Two resolutions were passed Tuesday night that will allow the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation to move forward with their lease rental bond project. The resolution approving the form of lease agreement and the resolution approving the issuance of series 2017 bonds received unanimous board approval.
Attorney Thomas Peterson explained that the resolution approving the form of lease agreement authorizes officers to sign the lease that has been before them since June. Before they could sign the lease, the board had to follow proper protocol, such as holding a public hearing over the lease agreement. North Judson-San Pierre School board held a public hearing for a proposed lease agreement as well the 2018 school budget prior to their regularly scheduled meeting last night. They were specifically addressing the Capital Projects Fund and the Bus replacement fund during the hearing.
Treasurer Guy Richie explained that approximately 40 percent of the capital project funds go toward technology with the remaining funds being disbursed among things such as insurance, utilities and repairs. The North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation will hold registration for new students beginning July 31.

North Judson-San Pierre Elementary School may soon be getting a new school-wide discipline policy. The school board will consider adding it into the school handbook during tonight’s meeting.
The North Judson-San Pierre School Board welcomed two new members and elected a new president Tuesday. Jackson Township Representative Gerald Bacon and Railroad Township Representative Susan McCormack were both sworn in, according to Superintendent Annette Zupin.

The North Judson-San Pierre School Board approved some purchases Tuesday. Board members voted to spend over $10,000 for a mower from Culver Power Equipment. Superintendent Annette Zupin said the corporation’s current mower is old and needs to be replaced. She added that money is included in this year’s Capital Projects budget for that purpose.
