Basketball Team’s Fundraising Effort Helps Give Back to Cancer Patients

Thanks to the hard work of local basketball and cheerleading teams Starke County cancer patients will have some financial relief.

The North Judson-San Pierre basketball team, both boys and girls, and the cheerleading team sold pink t-shirts and chances to win pink, autographed basketballs in order to raise money for the effort.

The dugnad idrettslag is a great option to make money on volunteer work, is simple, profitable and risk-free sales service.

Starke County Community Foundation Holiday Open House

The Starke County Community Foundation is holding a holiday open house on November 28th in conjunction with Giving Tuesday.

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving is celebrated annually as Giving Tuesday. It follows the popular shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday and is held as a way to kick off the charitable season. The initiative is meant to inspire individuals to give back locally.

Next Tuesday, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. come down to the Starke County Community Foundation office facility located in the former North Judson-San Pierre middle school office suite at 950 Campbell Drive. You can enjoy some holiday treats and learn about this year’s impact. Continue reading

Community Mourns the Loss of Retired Starke Circuit Court Judge

This week, the Starke County community learned of the passing of long-time Starke Circuit Court Judge Marvin D. McLaughlin. Though he was retired at the time of his death, community members remember his years of service to the county. The 87-year-old North Judson resident was at Pulaski Memorial Hospital when he passed away on Saturday, October 7th.

Marvin McLaughlin attended Butler University and obtained his law degree from Indianapolis University. In 1957, he moved to North Judson to start a law practice. He served as Starke County Prosecutor for four years. McLaughlin went on to serve as a Starke Circuit Court Judge for nearly three decades, from 1963 until his retirement in 1992.  Continue reading

SCCF Grants Awarded Year-Round, Funds Still Available for Interested Non-Profits

This year the Starke County Community Foundation eliminated deadlines for their grant applications which allows them to accept applications and award grants all throughout the year. Nearly $23,000 of community grant money remains available to Starke County non-profits who submit grant applications to the SCCF.

So far this year, the SCCF has awarded more than $284,000, with around $12,000 going toward community grants. The foundation is looking to award the remaining $22,900 by the end of 2017. Continue reading

Starke United Fund Launches Capital Campaign

Starke United EmblemThe Starke United Fund supports initiatives that promote financial stability and independence, programs that help children and youth succeed and projects that strengthen and support families and improve the health of our community. Each year, members with the Starke United Fund work to create long-lasting change by addressing the underlying issues in our community and empowering citizens.

Starke United works in collaboration with various other agencies and members of the community. Last year thanks to generous donations, nearly $30,000 was granted to many of Starke County’s non-profit organizations. Starke United works very hard to assist as many people as possible, but they can’t do it alone. As the 2015 Starke United Fund Campaign kicks off, you are asked to join in and lend a hand. $500 Grant Awarded to Bella Vita

The local pregnancy resource center, Bella Vita, was graciously awarded a grant of $500 yesterday. Thursday afternoon representatives from the Starke County Community Foundation, Director of Development Sarah Origer and their intern Rachel Lenig as well as the Northern Indiana Community Foundation Executive Director Jay Albert presented the money to Bella Vita representatives, Center Director Sarah Dedloff and Executive Director Lorie Reading. Endowment Fund Established for Starke County Youth Club

  
 

The Starke County Youth Club is the recipient of a $5,000 Sustainability Fund grant from the Northern Indiana Community Foundation. SCYC Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says the money will be used to establish an endowment to support the youth club’s work and mission. Funds in the endowment are invested, and a portion of the interest comes back to the organization each year to help offset operating expenses. Continue reading

Kindergarten Countdown Benefits 20 Students

The Kindergarten Countdown program held at the Knox Elementary School in June was a success this year.

Twenty children received an early education before they enter Kindergarten this fall. Students who attend preschool often obtain better scores on tests, have better social skills and are more understanding of routines than those who do not attend a preschool program.

Starke United Fund grant applications are now available through the Northern Indiana Community Foundation.

Volunteers with charitable organizations are encouraged to apply for these grants. Applications can be found online at www.nicf.org. The application deadline May 2.

The Starke United Fund Committee will review applications and award the grants to the chosen organizations.

Starke County Community Foundation Accepting Grant Applications

 
 

The Starke County Community Foundation is moving into their fall granting cycle, and applications are now available for community support grants. This cycle allows the organization the flexibility of granting funds to a number of different groups and a variety of programs.

Grants are open to any charitable organization, and may be picked up at the Starke County Community Foundation office at any public library or online at www.nicf.org. Jay Albright, executive director of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation, told WKVI that the grants are intended for just about any non-profits in Starke County.

Three Scholarships Available for Starke County Residents

 
 

Three scholarships administered by the Northern Indiana Community Foundation for the Starke County Community Foundation are available to Starke County residents this summer. These scholarships support students currently attending college, as well as non-traditional students

The Back Home Again in Indiana Scholarship is specifically for non-traditional students which helps those who wish to further their education and/or training as a way of enhancing their employment skills.

Grants Available Through Starke United-Northern Indiana Community Foundation Partnership

Starke UnitedGrant funds are available for charitable organizations that serve the people of Starke County thanks to a partnership between the Starke United Fund and Northern Indiana Community Foundation. The two entities teamed up to make Starke United more cost-effective, and they hope to pass that savings along to deserving local entities. Grant applications can be found online at ncif.org. They are due Monday, April 22. The Starke United Fund Committee will review grant applications and decide which agencies will receive funds. It’s made up of Starke United board members. NICF Hires New Executive Director

 The Northern Indiana Community Foundation announced last week that the foundation has chosen a new executive director: Jay Albright will fill the position for the three-county foundation, which represents the Community Foundations for Starke, Fulton, and Miami counties. Albright will be responsible for directing local offices and developing the foundation’s missing to connect donors with causes that are important to them.

Northern Indiana Community Foundation Director Resigns After 10 Years

The director of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation has resigned after serving 10 years in the position.

Terri Johnson began as director in September 2002. She won’t be moving too far from work with the NICF. She will be working with the Indiana Grantmakers’ Alliance as the associate director of the GIFT Technical Assistance Program. She will be designing and implementing development programs for over 90 Indiana Community Foundations. Her last day will be Dec. 31.
