Early in the project, crews worked to install a small diameter force main as part of the collection system

The long-awaited sewer system in Koontz Lake was put into operation with a connection of three homes on Monday, March 5th.

“At our February meeting, we made a determination that the system was at a stage of substantial completion,” said Koontz Lake Regional Sewer District President, Paul Warnke. “This allowed us to begin connection to households and businesses. On Monday, March 5th, we had the first three homes officially connected to the system with full functionality and we then had ceremonial toilet flushes.”

Koontz Lake Sewer Project Ahead of Schedule

Crews work to install rebar for the walls that will contain the tanks

Paul Warnke and Ken Jones came before the Starke County Commissioners this week to report on the progress of the Koontz Lake Sewer Project.

Jones told the Commissioners that the project is ahead of schedule and street and road restoration began this week which is making the public very happy.

The restoration could not begin until NIPSCO pressure tested the power to the grinder pumps. After that was done, the cuts in the road could be restored. Continue reading

Drinking Water Quality Product to be Discharged at Koontz Lake Clean Water Plant

Paul Warnke from the Koontz Lake Sewer District has been with us this week talking about the new sewer system being constructed in Koontz Lake.

The clean water plant takes the incoming product and processes it through many stages of purification. Warnke talks about the final product.

“What is discharged is a grade of water that is termed near drinking water quality,” Warnke said. “The final step in the purification is to run it under high intensity ultra violets and essentially, we consider it to be clean and bacteria free.”

Koontz Lake Residents Responsible for Sewer Hookups; Septic Fills once Sewer Plant is Functioning

The Koontz Lake sewer facilty is being constructed and should be finished in mid-2012. Paul Warnke from the Koontz Lake Sewer District was asked what the residents and business owners will be responsible for once the plant is complete.

“Homeowners and business owners do not have what is often called a connection fee or tap charge; however, they are responsible, physically and financially, for the pumping of their septic tanks, filling the septic tank with fill and then connecting a three or four inch line from their home to the grinder pump,” Warnke explained. “That is their responsibility and their sole responsibility.”

Koontz Lake Regional Sewer District Project in Progress and on Schedule

A project that began in 2002 is in the construction phase and should be completed by the summer of 2012. The Koontz Lake Sewer project is making headway and Paul Warnke of the Koontz Lake Regional Sewer District is in to talk to us about it today.

“We started initial construction of the collection system about a month ago and they’re working out there everyday, five days a week, and so far, I’d have to say we’re pretty much on target,” said Warnke.
