Former County Home Superintendent Sues Pulaski County Officials

The former superintendent of Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County is suing the commissioners, auditor and county attorney for defamation, slander, libel and invasion of privacy. Sandra Hurd’s lawsuit stems from the circumstances that led to her suspension with pay and subsequent termination last August. Her lawsuit claims she found a possible clerical error in reports filed with a state agency last July, notified them and asked how to fix it. Hurd contends the commissioners convened an executive session July 29th and accused her of committing Medicaid fraud. She filed the necessary paperwork the following day to correct the error, according to the suit, and the county was notified in writing on Aug. 22 that no fraud was committed. The commissioners fired Hurd during an emergency public meeting on Aug. 27th.

“She can be fired for screwing up these reports, which she admits she did, and she resulted in the county paying a fine,” county attorney Kevin Tankersley tells WKVI news. “These are all hard facts that nobody can dispute. The wrongful discharge has got no chance of winning, no chance. The defamation is equally bad, because it doesn’t say anything we said.”  Continue reading →

The Pulaski County Auditor’s Office is looking for interested members of the community to apply for a position on the Pleasant View Rest Home Advisory Board after it was discovered that the board had been established outside of the requirements of state statute. President of the commissioners Larry Brady explained that the board consists of seven members and was established in 2006, but it never went to the council for approval and it does not conform to state standards.

Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County has a new interim director and a new set of live-in caretakers. The Pulaski County Commissioners appointed Charlene Spence to oversee the county home until a full-time replacement for Sandy Hurd can be hired. She was recently fired after a suspension and investigation into the reported misrepresentation of information to the state. Spence already works part-time at Pleasant View and will continue to be part-time during the interim period. Her hourly wage will remain $13.

The commissioners also approved the hiring of Christy and Justin Chapman to serve as live-in caretakers at the facility after the previous caretaker was released from his contract due to reported violations.

The Pulaski County Commissioners during a joint meeting with the County Council this week approved a motion appointing Commissioner Tracey Shorter to oversee the county rest home. According to Shorter, the commissioners are following the trend of other counties in appointing commissioners over various departments in order to more quickly resolve issues.

Pleasant View Rest Home Staying Dry Under New Roof

The Pleasant View Rest Home is finally resting easy under a new roof, after nearly a year of fundraising and planning with the help of a nearby roofing professional.

Work on the roof began in October and lasted about a month, with the work performed by BB Carpentry of Winamac. BB Carpentry was hired by the Friends of Pleasant View in February, after they submitted the lowest bid for the contract.

According to Kerry Baker, president of Friends of Pleasant View, the local nonprofit organization that spearheaded the roof project, the Friends had originally hoped to begin the roofing work last spring, but the funding had not yet been secured. Baker said that the final cost of the project actually came in below what they had been expected, allowing the county to save about $13,000 from their expected $20,000 expense.

Sandy Hurd of the Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County told the commissioners this week that she, like many others, is in need of part-time help. Hurd said that her current part-time employee recently applied for Social Security benefits and is now only allowed to work a few hours per week, so she needs to replace her hours with someone else.

Pulaski County Commissioners Deny Request for Occupancy at Pleasant View Rest Home

The “No Vacancy” sign at the Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County is officially lit. With their capacity of 15 residents completely full, the county commissioners this week denied a request from an individual who wanted to stay at the home.

The state ombudsman asked if the county would be willing to take someone in with an income of only $700– a little under the $1148 the home normally charges. Previously, the ARCH program offered by the state would make up that difference, but that program has been frozen for two years, offering elderly people with low income fewer places to turn.

Pulaski County Rest Home Roof to be Repaired

Residents of the Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County may soon be enjoying the benefits of a roof without leaks, thanks to the “Friends of Pleasant View,” an organization dedicated to supporting the home. The roof has gone into disrepair, and a number of leaks have sprung causing further damage. The county previously wanted to close it, but the Friends of Pleasant View has been doing some fundraising to, hopefully, get this problem taken care of and put the rest home back in comfortable condition.
