Fundraiser Scheduled to Save the Vurpillat in Winamac

A fundraiser is scheduled for this weekend to help save the historic Vurpillat Opera House in downtown Winamac. Artist Local 3033 is hosting an art show Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. ET followed by a concert from 6 to 11 p.m. with a $2 admission. All proceeds go toward the opera house restoration.

Wireman Pleads Not Guilty During Initial Court Appearance

The Starke County sheriff’s candidate who is charged with impersonating a corrections officer made his initial court appearance this morning in Pulaski County. Greg Wireman entered a not guilty plea to the charge, which was filed by Pulaski County Prosecutor Stacey Mrak after Starke County officials recused themselves. It stems from a February incident at Wireman’s aunt’s rural Starke County home. She called him because three door-to-door vacuum cleaner salespeople were being very pushy and wouldn’t leave her house. They claim Wireman detained them and claimed he was a corrections officer. Wireman’s next appearance before Pulaski Superior Court Judge Patrick Blankenship is Aug. 15. His attorney has filed a motion to dismiss all charges.

On an incredibly warm evening both Hurford and Shidler saw a considerable amount of playing time throughout the game, which ended with the South winning 27-6. While Hurford played his usual defensive end position, Shidler lined up as a wide receiver and had a pass reception in the 4th quarter. Heat Advisory Issued Until Friday Night

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the WKVI listening area until Friday evening. It officially takes effect today at noon ET and continues until 8 tomorrow night, as temperatures climb into the low 90s and heat indexes hit the triple digit mark. Overnight lows will only drop into the low 70s tonight. A heat advisory means a combination of high temperatures and high humidity significantly increase the likelihood of heat related illness. If you have to be outside, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks. Children and the elderly are especially susceptible to heatstroke and other conditions, so be sure to check on them and make sure they are well hydrated. Likewise, see that outdoor pets have ample water and shade. If possible, stay inside in the air conditioning until this weather breaks.
