For the third time, Pulaski County commissioners appeared before the county council to request their approval for the purchase of four iPads at a cost of $4259, and also for the third time, the council denied the request. Commissioner Tracey Shorter said that the iPads would allow the commissioners to work more efficiently, explaining that it is hard for the commissioners and the county attorney to keep up with the information that is provided in their information packets, and that inconvenience has, in the past, translated to a loss for the county.

Winamac Council Agrees to Split Panhandle Pathway Spur Paving Cost

Panhandle Pathway LogoFriends of the Panhandle Pathway President John Bawcum says even though funds are available to extend the paved trail north to the depot at the corner of Main and Logan Streets in downtown Winamac, that project won’t be done until 2014.

“The Safe Routes to School money kicks in, the R.T.P. money kicks in, and we start heading down to the depot and beyond. The holdup is because of all the red tape, the environmental study and all that business. We have to get all that in place, get all that covered this year,” said Bawcum.

The West Central School Board approved a request during their March meeting for Four Star Counseling Center to provide a client meeting space for their case workers at the West Central Elementary School. Superintendent Charles Mellon reassured the board that the counseling service is just for West Central students and their parents or guardians.

“I think some people interpret it like we’d have a psychiatrist here and have different people walking in the door that we didn’t know and that’s not the case,” stated Mellon.

Elementary Principal Dan Zylstra will be sending a letter home to parents and guardians to clarify the services and encourage those students and guardians who would benefit to utilize the service.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Required to Increase Cafeteria Prices

The federal government is requiring that the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation raise cafeteria prices. Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman told the school board that the price will elevate beginning in the 2013-2014 school year.

“We have and are proud to have to lowest cafeteria prices for our students in the entire area,” stated Klitzman. “A meal is $1.50. The federal reimbursement is more than that so we need to increase our prices, per federal mandate, to $1.60.”

The board did approve that increase.

Star City Fire Department Called to Car Fire

 
 

Firefighters from the Star City Fire Department were called out to a fire at 4882 W. 550 S. in the town of Pulaski Tuesday afternoon.

Star City Fire Chief Mark Fox said seven or eight cars caught fire and it is undetermined how the fires started. Fox does not know if he will continue with an investigation at this time.

The Winamac Fire Department assisted at the scene along with the Buffalo Township Fire Department. Firefighters were on the scene for two-and-a-half hours. No injuries were reported.

Several Fires Reported over the Weekend

 
 
Firefighters were busy responding to various calls this weekend.

Spring fever has hit and everyone has been out cleaning yards and burning unwanted brush and leaves. Firefighters ask that you not burn anything outside on days where the gusty winds are forecast. It’s safer to put off until a calm wind is predicted in order to burn things outside.

Tippecanoe River State Park Manager to Share “State of the Park”

 
 
Join Tippecanoe River State Park officials for a special “state of the park” address tomorrow evening. Park Manager Vernon Gillum and assistant Jason Hickman have worked closely over the past year with the volunteer Friends of Tippecanoe River State Park group on several projects at the park, and have more in the works for this summer. Highlights of the past year include the addition of manure pits in the horseman’s campground, the placement of bird boxes around the property and the ongoing replacement of the overlooks behind the nature center. The Friends of Tippecanoe River State Park also hosted several successful events at the park, including a volunteer day last spring, a Halloween event in October and a Christmas at the Park in December. Plans are under way for a 70th anniversary celebration later this year. Gillum will highlight some goals for the upcoming year as well. The public is welcome to attend his presentation Wednesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. EDT at the Pulaski County Highway Garage on U.S. 35 on the north side of Winamac. The Friends of Tippecanoe River State Park will also conduct a brief business meeting.

Pulaski Council Approves Transfer of Funds from One Bridge to Another

 
 
The Pulaski County Council this week approved a $150,000 transfer from the funds dedicated to constructing a new bridge on County Road 625 East to the Haschell Bridge repair project. Recently appointed Highway Superintendent Mark Fox told the council at their meeting last night that the current deck for the bridge will be milled and the existing asphalt will be removed before workers remove a quarter-inch of existing concrete and perform full-depth patching to fill any potholes forming on the deck.

The West Central School Board received an update from Superintendent Charles Mellon about legislation regarding school resource officers.

“It could be an unfunded mandate,” said Mellon. “If the bill is presented in such a way saying that each corporation shall have a resource officer in each building, schools under 1,000 students will receive a $35,000 matching grant to hire this person, or these people.”

Presenter to Discuss History of Civil War Clothing April 22

  
 
Jane Cole, owner of the Cole Clothing Museum, will be addressing attendees about the history of clothing during the Civil War Era on April 22 at 6 p.m. ET at the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac. Cole will also discuss how to care for and preserve historical clothing.

The Pulaski County Junior Historical Society, the sponsor of this event, was recently awarded an Indiana Humanities Council grant. The funds were used to help bring this program to you. The remainder of the funding will be used to help support the club and its many activities slated for this year.

West Central School Board Discusses Kindergarten Roundup, Staffing

 
 

The West Central School Board got an update from Elementary Principal Dan Zylstra concerning the Kindergarten Roundup enrollment. Superintendent Charles Mellon indicated that the numbers look good.

“Our roundup figures are near 70 which is good for us. We were down to only two sections last year. That means we do have kids in the community that will be coming to school next year,” stated Mellon.

The Winamac Community High School will soon present Tarzan the musical, and the socialtorium stage has recently undergone a transformation into an African jungle as parents, students, and staff work diligently to bring the bigger-than-life legend of Tarzan to the stage. The production stars Winamac junior J.T. Garnett in the title role and includes co-stars Taylor Smith, Emerald Blankenship, Andrew Brandon, Ralph Thomas and Joshua Tankersley.

Francesville Man Sentenced in Pulaski Superior Court

A Francesville man was sentenced in Pulaski Superior Court this week after pleading guilty in a plea agreement with the state.

Sean Allman was sentenced to serve 14 months in the Pulaski County Jail on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class D Felony. All of the sentence will be suspended with the exception of 60 days. He will serve 12 months of probation. He was also ordered to pay $365 in restitution to James Ledden.

Fundraiser Contributes More Than $40,000 to Panhandle Pathway

A local fundraising effort culminated in the presentation of a check in excess of $40,000 for the Panhandle Pathway. Dan and Virginia Dolezal, co-chairs of Panhandle Pathway’s Pave the Trail to Town fundraiser, presented the donation to the board of directors at the business meeting on March 26. Dan Dolezal said the original goal was $39,000, but after kicking off the effort on Nov. 1, the group had raised more than their original goal by Feb. 25. The fundraising continued until March 31, and Dolezal said they had raised $41,075 by that time.

Pulaski County Building Inspector Dave Dare has an assistant to help with some of the additional responsibilities recently given to his office. Dare is also in charge of enforcing the county’s comprehensive land use plan, which was adopted last year by the county commissioners. They voted Monday to hire David R. Weber as an assistant to the county building official and secretary to the advisory plan commission and board of zoning appeals. The position is part-time, as the plan commission and BZA meet once a month.

Energy was the topic of discussion during the West Central School Board meeting Thursday night. Superintendent Charles Mellon said the board signed a contract with Sure Energy.

“This is the company that will do the maintenance on our [wind] turbine. They’re out of Sandusky, Ohio,” said Mellon.

Pulaski County Public Library Now Offers MP3 and Magazine Downloads

  
 
The Pulaski County Public Library is working hard at expanding its services, and to that end, the library has added digital magazine and MP3 music file downloads to its collection. The library’s website now offers access to more than 3 million downloadable songs, including access to The Freegal Music Service, an online database with legal music files that do not expire and are compatible with nearly all devices.

Pulaski County Public Library resident cardholders are eligible for three MP3 downloads per week, available online at www.pulaskicounty.lib.in.us. Library officials expect Freegal will appeal to patrons of all ages and musical tastes, and librarians will be happy to assist users with the new service.

Pulaski County Commissioners OK Hotel Feasibility Study Expenditure

Pulaski County Commissioners have approved the expenditure of up to $1,000 on a feasibility study for a proposed hotel in Winamac. Wisconsin-based Cobblestone Development has approached the Winamac Town Council about building a hotel there geared to business travelers. The first step is a feasibility study, of which the company will pay half. Pulaski County Economic Development Director Nathan P. Origer says officials with the town of Winamac have asked local shareholders to help offset the $3,500 cost. Commissioner Larry Brady says there’s definitely a need for affordable overnight accommodations.
