There are a few seats available on the bus that will take you to Washington, D.C.

“We’re filling up,” said WKVI Tour Director, Ed Hasnerl. “We still have a seat or two available for anyone who wold like to go. We have some cancellations. It’s going to be an exciting time. We’ve got Alan Selge, from the Knox Middle School, who is a great historian. He is going to be sharing his DVDs and he’ll be in costume. That will be a great kick off.”

Ed talks about the sites you will visit on the trip.

“All the standard memorials – the Vietnam Wall, the WW II Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and F.D.R. Memorial.”

Illinois Man Arrested after Attempted Rape Incident in Winamac

An Illinois man was arrested in Pulaski County on Sunday after an alleged attempted rape incident.

The charging information indicates that Alexandros Kleronomos reportedly broke into the residence of the female victim in Winamac and stole items from the residence and while there, strangled the victim and attempted to rape her. He reportedly did this in the presence of a nine-year-old child. He also took the victim’s food stamps and keys in the incident. The Winamac Police Department responded to the call and arrested Kleronomos. He is currently in the Pulaski County Jail.

Zachary Dix Arrested after Alleged Fight in Francesville

A Francesville man was arrested after striking a 15-year-old in the face, causing a half-inch laceration to the upper lip of the juvenile which required six stitches to close. 19-year-old Zachary D. Dix was arrested and faces charges of Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury as a Class C felony.

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 300 block of North Bill Street in Francesville in response to a physical altercation. When they arrived on the scene, deputies were told that Zachary Dix, had allegedly struck the victim in the face while the two were in the front yard of the residence. The juvenile reportedly said that attack knocked him unconscious and left him in a great deal of pain.

Income Tax Filing Deadline is April 17th

You might have thought that your federal income tax returns were due next Monday. Usually when April 15th falls on a weekend, the income tax filing deadline is pushed to the following Monday. When the deadline falls on a federal holiday, it’s pushed to the next business day. This time around, April 15 falls on a Sunday and yet your taxes are not due until April 17th. Why?

April 16th is Emancipation Day which is a holiday in Washington, D.C. Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act by President Lincoln in 1862, which freed the slaves in the District of Columbia.

This week is National Telecommunications Operators Week. This week is set aside to recognize the importance of those who coordinate the efforts of police, fire, EMS workers as they perform their duties.

Telecommunications operators, or police dispatchers, are the unsung heroes of public safety. In one second, a dispatcher may be communicating a routine function to an officer and the next they may be coordinating a high speed pursuit, dispatching emergency assistance to run to an accident scene, or there may be a situation where police are involved in a gun battle.

“Voter registration closes on April 9th at the close of business and then it doesn’t reopen until May 22nd. The first day of in-office voting also begins the 9th of April,” said Skronski.

Junior Achievement Bowl-a-Thon this Wednesday; Pro Bowler Mike Aulby to Make Appearance

The Junior Achievement Bowl-a-Thon is this Wednesday, April 11th at 6:00 p.m. CT, at Bowlaway Lanes in Knox where native Hoosier and Hall of Fame Pro Bowler, Mike Aulby, will be in attendance to sign autographs and help cheer on the teams in the tournament.

Junior Achievement Board President, Bridget Markin, says there are great teams already signed up and there is room for three more five-member teams.

It’s Dyngus Day!

Today is Dyngus Day, a day that began as a Polish tradition to celebrate Easter Monday. Boys used to hit girls legs with pussy willow branches and splash water on them as a way of flirting.

It’s also an opportunity for community members to meet candidates for local, state and national political office – a practice that has been a tradition since the 1930s. In South Bend, candidates meet at the West-Side Democratic Club where they speak on a small stage in front of a mural illustrating a 19th century Dyngus Day celebration.

Counties to Receive Thousands, Millions from Found Money

The Department of Revenue Commissioner, John Eckart, has resigned after state officials found $205 million in local option income tax money owed to counties wasn’t distributed. State Budget Director, Adam Horst, blamed the problem on a programming error.

The problem with distribution of the local income tax money comes months after the state found $320 million in corporate taxes that were collected over four years but not transferred to the state’s general fund.

Pulaski County Commissioners OK Shovel Ready Support

Nathan Origer of the Pulaski County Community Development Commission approached the county commissioners this week to request permission to purchase a manual covering building codes and other information for the Planning Commission. According to Origer, the money is available in the Planning Commission budget, and it can be appropriated to Training and Supplies to cover the cost of the manual. However, Origer says, that appropriation would require approval from the county council.

Good Friday is the culmination of Holy Week that began on Palm Sunday and takes place two days before Easter.

Winamac Husband and Wife Jailed After Five-Mile Pursuit

A high-speed chase that lasted over five miles on Saturday night came to a dangerous conclusion when the driver lost control on a gravel road and struck a tree.

An officer with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of County Road 475 South and U.S. 35, but instead of stopping, the driver, Eric Gudas of Winamac, sped up and tried to evade police. Gudas ran several stop signs during the high-speed chase and even threw several empty beer cans out the window of the vehicle before turning onto a gravel road where he lost control and struck a tree.

Pulaski County Food Pantry Stocked With Meats, Needs Personal Items

Although a commodities truck delivery is coming next week, the Pulaski County Human Service’s Food Pantry is in need of items that cannot be purchased with food stamps.

The pantry is in need of personal items, as well as shampoo, toiletries, childrens’ diapers, and laundry detergent, as well as a number of other items. According to Midge Mendiola of the pantry, they are stocked with meats and other food–though the organization has seen an increase in demand due to unemployment and the economy. With rising food prices, Mendiola explained, food stamps are being stretched thin.

Campaign Signs Will be Removed from Highway Right-of-Ways

It’s the political campaigning season and the Indiana Department of Transportation wants to remind candidates that all campaign signs are prohibited from federal and state highway rights-of-way.

By law, INDOT crews are required to remove all unauthorized signs within the right-of-way. Prohibited areas include all interstates and their interchanges, all intersections where at least one local, state or federal road intersects with a state or federal highway, and an area that extends from a federal or state highway to the back of a ditch, to the fence line or up to utility poles.

This is Maundy Thursday in the United States, and it is celebrated with services in many Christian churches. Holy Thursday, or Maundy Thursday, commemorates the institution of the Eucharist, a Christian sacrament that involves consecrating bread and wine. The term “Maundy” derives from the Latin word for “commandment.” The New Testament in the Bible describes events that took place on Holy Thursday. These events include Jesus washing his disciples’ feet and the Last Supper before he was arrested. Many Maundy Thursday church traditions come from practices that took place in Europe for many centuries.

Senator Charbonneau behind Bill that Eliminates Personal Property Tax for Potential Companies

State Senator Ed Charbonneau

Fifth District State Senator Ed Charbonneau, of Valparaiso, has championed a bill that passed the state legislature this year that would allow local communities to eliminate personal property tax on equipment for potential companies. This, according to Charbonneau, will make Northern Indiana more appealing to hi-tech companies with high paying jobs to consider locating in our area.

“We’re doing whatever we can as a state to remain one of the best states for business friendliness because that means we’re going to be attractive to bringing new jobs into the state,” stated Charbonneau.

Fundraisers Scheduled to Fund Annual Fireworks Celebrations

Local groups are planning fundraisers to help pay for annual Fourth of July fireworks celebrations.

The Winamac VFW and the Winamac Kiwanis Club are teaming up to raise money for the Fourth of July display at the Winamac Town Park. A fish fry fundraiser will be held on Friday, April 6th from 4:00-7:30 p.m. ET at the Winamac VFW. Marita Grisel, President of the Winamac Kiwanis Club, says that the VFW has returned to their prior supplier for the larger fish filets. The dinner is $8.00 which includes fish, baked beans and coleslaw. All the money raised will help defray the rising cost of the fireworks.
