Deer hunting season is officially underway in Indiana. Today marks the start of archery season, which runs through Jan. 3, 2016. All hunters must have a license and must use legal archery equipment as defined by the DNR. These include long bows, compound bows or recurve bows and arrows. The bow must have a pull of at least 35 pounds. Arrows must be tipped with broadheads that are metal, metal-edged or napped flint; chert or obsidian. Continue reading

Victims Airlifted From Pulaski County Crash Site
Speed and possibly alcohol are to blame for a single-vehicle accident that sent five people to hospitals via air ambulance. It happened just before 5 p.m. Monday night on 400 North near 350 East in Pulaski County. When sheriff’s deputies arrived they found a Pontiac G-6 overturned on the north side of the road in a cornfield. Continue reading

They’re running a design contest open to all students, artists and inspired community members to assist them in the endeavor to find something visually pleasing, creative, professional and easily recognizable. The logo should help promote the mission, which is “to encourage and dispense genealogical knowledge and cultivate fraternal relations among its members.” It should also be representative of Pulaski County. INDOT Hiring Seasonal Help
The Indiana Department of Transportation is getting ready for winter. The agency is teaming up with WorkOne of northwest Indiana to hire seasonal maintenance crew members and snow plow drivers. Positions are available across the entire northwest Indiana district, which includes Starke, Pulaski, Marshall, Fulton, St. Joseph, LaPorte, Porter, Lake, Newton, Jasper, White, Cass and Carroll Counties. BraunAbility Announces Acquisition by Investor Group
BraunAbility has been acquired by a Sweden-based investment firm.
The company, called Investor AB, recently signed the agreement that will make the Winamac operated Braunability part of the company’s portfolio. Others businesses in that list include AstraZeneca, Electrolux, and NASDAQ.

Informational Website Launched for N.J.-S.P. School Referendum
Voters who live within the North Judson-San Pierre School District can learn more about the corporation’s proposed general fund referendum by visiting a new website. www.njspfundourfuture.com explains the rationale behind the push for a property tax increase. Corporation officials say it’s necessary due to what they’ve described as a perfect storm of declining enrollment and changes in the way the state funds schools. Pulaski County Sees Legacy Quilt Approved for Bicentennial Celebration
Pulaski County saw its Legacy Project approved prior to celebrating Indiana’s 200th year in existence.
Approval follows a meeting of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission in Lake County on September 18th. The commission is made up of 15 members and looks to execute the statewide celebration of Indiana’s birthday.
Another Step Taken Toward Development of Rail-Served Industrial Park
Pulaski County’s goal of developing a rail-served industrial park has taken another step forward.
In the last week or so, the owners of the preferred property for the site have given the go ahead to begin work on the project. Pulaski County is currently lacking rail infrastructure to attract and retain major manufacturing business.

Area Counties See Declines in Unemployment
Unemployment in Starke County declined slightly from July to August, according to the latest job numbers released by the state. All but one county saw decreases in unemployment rates. Starke County dropped from 5.8 to 5.5 percent. That’s still higher than the state average unemployment of 4.6 percent or the national 5.1 percent jobless figure. Continue reading
Winamac Desires Purchase of Unsafe Downtown Building
A building slated for demolition may be sold to the Town of Winamac.
The Pulaski County Commissioners heard the request at their meeting last night. The structure, located in the 200 block of West Main Street in Winamac, was deemed unsafe after problems with the structure as well as mold were located.

Culver School Board Discusses Temporary Use of Monterey Building

Winamac Lumber Repays Revolving Loan
A Winamac business has paid off a business loan to the Pulaski County Revolving Loan Fund a year ahead of schedule. The county loaned $100,000 to All Seasons Home Center manager Kyle Kruzick and local contractor Phil White in September of 2011 to operate a home improvement store in the All Seasons buildings. The loan allowed the newly-established Winamac Lumber Yard to buy fixtures and equipment from All Seasons.
On Jan. 1, 2013 White and his wife bought out Kruzick’s share of the company and later purchased the property from his family. Continue reading
