Changes were recently made to “novice driver laws.” According to information from AAA, teenagers who complete a driver’s education course can get their probationary license at age “16 and 90 days.”

Farmers are reminded to make sure their hay is adequately dry before putting it into the barn for storage, as wet hay increases the risk of a fire. Purdue Extension forage specialist Keith Johnson says the moisture content of hay for storage should be no higher than 20 percent. That’s because heat-tolerant microorganisms can develop in hay bales and raise their temperature. If it gets higher than 150 degrees, farmers should take apart the bales or stacks and let air circulate. Johnson says fire becomes very likely if the temperature hits 200 degrees. He adds this year’s wet conditions make the risk of fire even greater. Continue reading
Indiana Conservation Officers will be on the lookout for people drinking and boating this weekend on Indiana waterways. They are taking part in a national Operation Dry Water weekend enforcement campaign. The effort focuses on deterring boaters from operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Continue reading

A Pulaski County business was among those selected to travel to China as part of a trade delegation.
Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann organized her second trade mission to Asia, but is largely focused on China during this month’s trip. According to a press release, the Indiana delegation met with both national and provincial leaders to promote agricultural trade.
The annual Spirit of Pulaski County, formerly known as Germanfest, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 8 this year at the Train Depot in downtown Winamac. During the event, the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a spirit ride and spirit walk in memory of Tina Kasten and all other domestic abuse victims. Kasten is a local woman whose husband was arrested for her murder back in May. Continue reading

A flash flood watch is in effect for Northern Indiana through this evening. The National Weather Service warns thunderstorms with heavy rainfall will spread over the area this morning and continue through this afternoon. Plenty of consideration has led to a recommendation from the Pulaski County Election Board to purchase E-poll books.
The Election Board met Wednesday morning to further discuss using the devices in Pulaski County’s election activities. Starke and Marshall County’s have proposed similar measures.

A plant with the potential to cause harmful side effects is sprouting in Northern Indiana this month.
According to Purdue Extension, Poison Hemlock can be found along roadsides, farm fields, and railroad tracks. The plant is considered a biennial – which means it lives over the course of two years. The stalk can grow between three and eight feet tall.

Starke County saw a fractional uptick in unemployment for the month of May, according to figures released this week by the state. The jobless rate of 5.9 percent is up one-tenth of a percent. Statewide May unemployment is at 5.1 percent for the month. Continue reading
The fairgrounds in Pulaski County are dealing with some standing water.
According to officials with Purdue Extension’s Pulaski County offices, recent rains and flooding have caused the water at the site. Hope remains though that the 4H fair and Pulaski County Community will still be held at the fairgrounds.
