Fire departments in LaPorte and and a town in Pulaski County are among the recipients of grants from the Indiana Homeland Security Foundation. Statewide more than $370,000 was given to 101 recipients in 61 counties for critical needs. Eligible projects include equipping emergency responders with personal protective equipment, acquiring equipment for use by emergency responders, providing radios and technology equipment and training for emergency responders. Summer begins this Sunday and warmer temperatures often come with it.
The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor is providing tips to help combat the increase in electric bills.
Counselor Dave Stippler says the summer season should be a time to remember to use electricity more wisely. Doing so can not only ease the cost of running utilities, but also prevent excess workload on the electric grid.

Items Auctioned This Weekend at Pleasant View Rest Home
Items will be auctioned this weekend at the Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County.
The auction is taking place on June 20th to rid the site of several items inside the structure. County officials agreed to cease operations at the Pleasant View Rest Home due to budgetary concerns and renovation costs.
Rainfall Brings Drainage Efforts in Local Fields
Rains over the last several days have left plenty of water in fields.
According to Purdue Extension Agricultural Educator Phil Woolery, the standing water may be at a point that it’s now causing poor root growth. In severe cases, this amount of moisture can lead to seedling death.

Pulaski County Commissioners Consider Start of Courthouse Renovations
Considerations have been made for some time, but weeks of side comments during meetings has led a first step to be taken when it comes to renovating the Pulaski County Courthouse.
During Monday evening’s Pulaski County Commissioners meeting, it was learned that an engineering firm will appear in Winamac to get an overview for the courthouse renovations. Plans are still in their preliminary stages.

Pulaski County Government Considers Self Last Resort in Monterey Clean-up
Rubble remains at the site of the former Sportsman’s Bar and Grille, and according to the Pulaski County Commissioners, few are taking responsibility.
The building collapsed earlier this year, prompting health and safety concerns in Monterey. It was learned during Monday’s Pulaski County Commissioners meeting that a local resident has offered to haul the building’s remains away for free. The individual must first become registered with the County Building Inspector.

Ten Mile Road Closed Until Further Notice
Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area officials in North Judson have closed Ten Mile Road in Starke County until further notice due to soggy conditions. Pulaski County Bridges in Need of Supplemental Inspections
The option exists to lower the count, but the Pulaski County Commissioners may need to conduct a second inspection instead.
During last night’s Commissioners meeting, officials with United Consulting presented results of a bridge inspection conducted earlier this year. Those results indicate that 10 bridges in the county have a relatively low sufficiency rating.

Indiana AG Urging FCC Rules Change
The Indiana Attorney General’s Office is touting new rules to constituents that could help prevent robocalls and other text messaging scams.
The rules come courtesy of the Federal Communications Commission – which has proposed allowing phone carriers to put call-blocking technologies on devices. According to information released by the Attorney General’s office, the technology exists, but current FCC rules disallow it.
Flash Flood Watch in Effect Through Monday Night
A flash flood watch is in effect for northern Indiana through late tonight. The National Weather Service warns thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are expected to become widespread across the area this afternoon and tonight as a slow moving cold front comes into the area. Council, Judge Confer on Security at Pulaski Courthouse
Pulaski County Circuit Court Judge Michael Shurn is hoping to work with the County Council to increase security.
The comments came earlier this week during a joint session of the County Commissioners and Council. Judge Shurn says he has formed a committee to review safety and make proposals, but addressed the two bodies to ensure they were cooperating.
