The old town dump operated by the town of Winamac decades ago is finally a thing of the past, according to Town Manager Jim Conner. He said the council this week received a “no further action” letter from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management regarding the dump, stating that the town no longer has to perform testing, monitoring or cleanup at the site.
Final Payouts Completed for Water Line Replacement Project in Winamac
The water project in the town of Winamac is finally complete, but Town Manager Jim Conner said there will be a few maintenance items to address come spring. The town council this week approved the final payouts for the water project they’ve been working on this summer and all the work is finally complete.
Pulaski Maintenance Dept. Requesting Part-Time Hire
Pulaski County Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston said his department is in need of an additional part-time employee, but the county council this week decided to postpone discussion until next year. Johnston approached the council during their meeting on Monday night with a request to hire another part-time employee with the help of a $12,900 additional transfer.
Public Hearing Held on Eastern Pulaski School Corporation Budget
The Eastern Pulaski School Board held a public hearing for the 2014-2015 school budget.
The budget includes the Capital Projects Plan for the 2014-2015 and 2016-2017 years, plus the 2014-2015 through 2015-2016 Bus Replacement Plan.
Frain Recertified as Certified Funeral Service Practitioner
Samuel J. Frain, co-owner of Frain Mortuary in Pulaski County, has recently qualified to become re-certified as a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner through the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. Frain is also a lifetime member of the academy.
Town of Winamac Hires Garbage, Recycling Collection Company
The town of Winamac will save roughly $12,000 a year by privatizing the collection of garbage and recycling in the town, according to Town Manager Jim Conner. Conner told WKVI that the town council this week decided to accept a bid from Advanced Disposal Services to provide garbage and recycling services for the town at a cost of $141,408 for the first year.
Pulaski Council Declines Exception in Pay Rate of Administrative Asst
The Pulaski County Council this week decided not to make an exception in the pay rate of a part-time administrative assistant for the probation department at the behest of Hollie Schultz. Schultz told the council that her office has no full-time administrative person, though they have two part-timers, one of whom has been recently replaced.
West Central School Board Discusses Budget
The West Central School Board discussed the corporation’s budget at their recent meeting.
Superintendent Charles Mellon said the corporation received the 1792 notice and the board reviewed the notice.
“I went through that with the board and explained the rationale behind some of the budget cuts with the main reason being the reduction in revenue coming in,” said Mellon.
Pulaski Council Gives Go-Ahead For Forgivable Loan
Winamac Coil Spring has cleared another hurdle in its quest to expand operations in Winamac as the county council this week gave their approval of a forgivable loan. A representative for Winamac Coil Spring approached the county council this week alongside Community Development Corporation Executive Director Nathan Origer, who said the business has acquired Chesapeake and they are looking to make improvements and investments in order to expand.
West Central School Board Approves Boiler Purchase
The West Central School Board approved the purchase of a new boiler as one of three boilers stopped working at the corporation.
Superintendent Charles Mellon said the board discussed purchasing either a high efficiency boiler or an 85 percent efficiency boiler.
“We approved going with the 85 percent efficiency boiler rather than the more expensive high efficiency boiler,” said Mellon. “Since there are three boilers tied together, tying one high efficiency boiler in with two that are not we weren’t gaining that much. We didn’t want to replace all three at this time.”
The board hopes that the purchase can be made soon so the boiler can be replaced.
Pulaski County Shop with a Cop Event a Success
Seventy-five children were treated to toys and clothes as part of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department Shop with a Cop event on Sunday, Dec. 8.
$4,200 was raised toward this effort and $175 was able to be spent by each child.

This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week and now is the time to get your flu vaccine.
Andrea Keller from the Pulaski County Health Department suggests getting a flu shot protecting yourself and others from the flu this winter season.
Winamac Town Council to Meet Tonight
The Winamac Town Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. ET in the Winamac Town Complex.
An update on the Pulaski County Family YMCA will be given by Mike Banta, Mark Kolish will discuss town board tile and AECom will have information on the water project.
The town superintendents will have a monthly update for the board while Town Manager Jim Conner will have a few discussion items as well as Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger.
This meeting is open to the public.
West Central School Board Approves School Improvement Plans
The West Central School Board members heard the school improvement plans for the school buildings at their meeting last week.
Superintendent Charles Mellon said these plans are required by the state. The principals gave a comprehensive report which the board approved.
“This is a little bit later this year,” said Mellon. “Normally that is to be done in September, but with the scoring errors and the lateness in getting the I-STEP results back to us, they extended that to January. The board approved the school improvement plans for each of the buildings.”
West Central School Board Approves Bus Bids
The West Central School Board approved a bid from Kerlin Bus Sales for two buses.
Superintendent Charles Mellon stated that the school traded in two buses for $14,500 to get two buses for the model year 2014.
“We purchased two 72-passenger Thomas buses for delivery in the spring,” stated Mellon. That was about $151,000 for the two buses.”
The board approved the purchase with a unanimous vote.
Officers Serve Forgery Warrant, Make Three Drug Arrests
A Winamac man who reportedly tried to hide in a closet in order to avoid a trip to jail is behind bars on a $35,000 bond. An officer from the Winamac Police Department responded to a tip that Keith L. Campbell, 44, of Winamac, was at an apartment on Franklin Street last night. Pulaski Commissioners Delay Insurance Bid Opening
The Pulaski County Commissioners this week passed a motion to postpone the opening of liability insurance bids after Barb Whitaker with Novotny Insurance approached the commissioners and stated that she was unaware they were accepting bids. She requested they postpone the bid opening to allow her to put together two bid proposals, and said there was some confusion because the county did not submit bid specs to be used in the bidding process.
Tree Lighting Ceremonies in Winamac, North Judson Today
The trees will soon be gloriously lit in Winamac and North Judson with tree lighting ceremonies scheduled in both towns on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. local time. In North Judson, a small parade will take place at 5:45 p.m. The lighting of the trees will then be performed by a child from the crowd who will pull the switch to turn on the lights. Following that, Reimbold said there will be hot cocoa, cookies and refreshments at the old firehouse with an appearance from Santa Claus himself.
Two Pulaski County Bridges Now Open
Two bridges that were previously closed in Pulaski County are now open, though one bridge is still awaiting a final inspection. Pulaski County Highway Superintendent Mark Fox told the county commissioners this week that the contract for bridge inspections for 2014–2016 has been approved by INDOT and is ready to sign, and informed them that the two bridges closed in the county have since been reopened. Bridge 268, however, still needs a final inspection but is currently open to traffic.
Governor Mike Pence Visits Pulaski County
Indiana Governor Mike Pence entered the Fox’s Den in Winamac Tuesday afternoon with a smile on his face and his hand extended to meet the many residents and business owners who gathered there and to discuss the state of Indiana, along with great measures the state is making in education and employment.
Governor Pence stated that small business is what makes Indiana a great place to be.
