Efforts to extend the Erie Trail toward Hebron could get a boost, if North Judson were to donate part of its short line railroad to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. That’s according to representatives from the Prairie Trails Club. Steve and Kathy Lucas voiced the group’s support for the proposal during Monday’s town council meeting.

The potential sale of North Judson’s short line railroad could complicate efforts to extend the North Judson Erie Trail. The Prairie Trails Club wants to extend the trail to the northwest, alongside the railroad tracks. Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Larry Wickert told the town council Monday that in order to get a Next Level Trails grant from the state, it would help to have a permanent easement from the town.

All communications with the railway management company Omega will now go through the town of North Judson rather than Hoosier Valley Railroad, according to Town Council President Wendy Hoppe.
Hoppe explained that Omega is the company responsible for the billing and collection services for residents who utilize anything that runs under the town’s railroad, “Anything that runs underneath, be it an irrigation line, be it a power line, be it a drainage tile.” Hoppe said, “Omega was billing them and taking care of all that.”
At the last few North Judson town council meetings, President Hoppe mentioned that she was contacted by a couple of different local farmers in the North part of town who reported very steep increases in their rates. Continue reading

HVRM Promotes Family Outdoor Activities with Train Excursions
A few railroad excursions will be offered this fall to area residents interested in observing the sights and smells of the season.
The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about railroading during its heyday. The train rides will take place the first three weeks in October and will travel the Northwest Indiana countryside.

Pulaski County Tax Auction Leads to Deed Recommendation
Pulaski County will have to spend a small amount of money in order to provide a deed to the individual buying county-owned land.
Attorney Kevin Tankersley says the property, described only as “railroad property,” was sold at tax auction. Before a deed can be given to the winning bid, however, a legal description is needed to complete the document. Currently the site is missing that description.

Bower Street Railroad Crossing in Knox Closed this Week
The railroad crossing on Bower Street in the City of Knox will be closed this week for maintenance.
The closure will be in place today and will be in effect for the entire week. The crossing is expected to open at the end of the day on Friday, Aug. 16.
A detour will be posted around the closure site. Be sure to include a small detour in your travel plans around the city.
