The Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association honored State Representative Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte) as Legislator of the Year during a ceremony held in Carmel. Scot Imus, IPCA Executive Director, presented the award to Rep. Dermody for working to streamline the collection process for the state’s gasoline sales tax during the 2013 legislative session.
Small Business Caucus Kick-off Event a Success
The first meeting of the Small Business Caucus took place this week at the Strongbow Inn in Valparaiso, where State Representative and SBC co-chair Tom Dermody, joined by other elected officials, met with various small business owners to listen to their concerns and discuss methods the government can use to improve the small business climate of Indiana.
Rep. Dermody Receives Public Service Award
A local legislator has received the distinguished Clifford D. Arnold Lions Club Memorial Award for Public Service.
Republican State Representative Tom Dermody was presented the award at a ceremony hosted by the Michigan City Lions Club. Dermody was honored for his dedication to serving Hoosiers.
Governor Signs Dermody Graduation Bill, Other Education Legislation
A bill sponsored by Representative Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, aimed at helping students finish college on time is now law. It was one of several education bills signed recently by Governor Mike Pence. The new law provides incentives for students to stay on track towards graduating with a bachelor’s degree in four years or an associate degree in two years. Students who graduate from high school with an academic honors diploma will earn increased higher education awards. Additionally, public colleges and universities are now required to commit to on-time degree pathways for each student and to bear the costs of any additional credits needed to complete the degree if the student follows the map and maintains a satisfactory GPA.
Meet and Greet Events Planned For Rep. Dermody in Starke County
Two Meet and Greet events have been planned in Starke County by the campaign for State Representative Tom Dermody. The events will allow Starke County voters the chance to meet Dermody and ask him questions regarding the upcoming election.
Dermody said they are very excited about the momentum their campaign is gaining in Starke County, and they look forward to the chance to hear directly from the voters at these upcoming events.
The first event will take place at the Starke County Republican Headquarters from 4–6 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 19. The second event will take place at the Knox Library from 6–7 p.m. CT on Monday, Oct. 22.
Rep. Dermody and Sen. Arnold To Address LaPorte County Taxpayers
State Representative Tom Dermody of LaPorte has announced he will be hosting a Town Hall-style meeting emphasizing the important of the taxpayer protection plan he has laid in place through the passage of Senate Engrossed Act 19. The Town Hall will be held at 4:30 p.m. today at the LaPorte Civic Auditorium.
Dermody says he will be discussing his amendment to SEA 19 that helps solve the property tax issues in LaPorte County, which he says is a positive solution to the city’s vital problem. Dermody will be joined by a representative of the Department of Local Government and Finance, as well as Senator Jim Arnold of La Porte.
Dermody represents parts of Porter, Starke, Jasper and LaPorte counties.

State Legislators to Help Author a Bill to Help Pay for Starke County Jail
Financing possibilities and informing the public have been topics the Starke County Jail Committee has been working on recently. The committee has discussed holding informational meetings throughout the county to bring the public up to date on various options for rehabbing or building a new jail.
Fires, escapes, and a class action lawsuit have brought attention to the liabilities at the jail. Reportedly the second oldest county jail in the state, the facility has been overcrowded at times throughout the past year.
Pulaski County Ronald Reagan Republicans of the Year Award Winners Announced
Bud and Alice Cummins were recently named the recipients of the first ever Pulaski County Ronald Reagan Republican of the Year Award. The award was given to the pair during the recent dinner hosted by the Pulaski County Republican Women at the Francesville Fire Station. The annual dinner and auction helps raise money for the county Republican party.
