Indiana has awarded more than $19 million in this year’s round of Secured School Safety Grants. The Culver Community Schools Corporation got the biggest share of that locally, with $100,000. The West Central School Corporation got $40,000.

The West Central School Corporation could save over $50,000 by refinancing its wind turbine bonds. The school board recently held a work session with a bond consultant from Baker Tilly, according to Superintendent Dan Zylstra.

Oregon-Davis Elementary School’s new secure entrance is almost complete. Once visitors enter the building, a set of doors restricts access to each hallway, forcing them to check in at the main office. Principal Bill Bennett says the school was able to make the upgrades thanks to a Secured School Safety matching grant from the state.

Several area school corporations are recipients of Secured School Safety Grant funds from the state. The program provides matching funds to school corporations to conduct a threat assessment, purchase equipment or restrict access to the school or expedite notice to first responders to hire a school resource officer.
