Residents signed up for the county’s Food Distribution Program can pick up their vouchers on September 15 starting at 8:00 a.m. in the Commissioner’s Meeting Room in Starke County Annex Building No. 1. Signup ended on August 13, and no new applicants are being accepted.

Funds Created for Starke County Park Board Grant Funds
With the acquisition of thousands of dollars worth of grants for projects at the Starke County Forest and the Bass Lake Beach, Starke County Auditor Kay Chaffins suggested the creation of two line items within the budget for those funds.
The park board was recently awarded $15,000 from the Hardesty Memorial Endowment Fund and $5,000 in a Community Support Grant.

The Starke County Commissioners held a public hearing Monday night on the proposed UTV Ordinance.
The county’s ordinance authorizes and regulates the use of Recreational Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs or side-by-sides) and Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) on certain county roads.
Property Owners May Qualify for Tax Exemptions
Property owners may qualify for real estate tax exemptions based on their age, disability status and whether or not they are a military veteran. The exemptions lower the amount of taxes due. Mortgage-holders qualify for a deduction of $3,000 if they reside on their real property, including mobile homes. It can be combined with other exemptions. A second exemption that’s available to owners who reside on their real estate, including mobile homes, is the homestead credit, also known as the standard deduction. Homestead credit mounts vary. Starke County Officials Seeking 2015 Board Appointees
The Starke County Council and Commissioners are seeking qualified, community-minded individuals to serve on a variety of boards and commissions in 2015. Many of the seats require specific party affiliation under Indiana Code. It is determined by the prospective nominee’s vote in the most recent primary election or a letter of support from the party chairman. Homestead Deductions and Verifications Need to be Verified, Filed
The Starke County Auditor’s office is getting ready to send out final notices to homeowners who have not filed homestead exemptions for property tax billing. If you do not file by the end of the year, your taxes will skyrocket next year.
You need to verify that you have a homestead deduction. If you go onto the auditor’s page on the Starke County website there is a list of property owners that need to verify exemptions.
