Efforts to recognize Starke County’s “Space Tree” have gotten the approval of the county commissioners. The seed orbited the Earth on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1988 and was planted on the northwest corner of the courthouse square in 1990. But Kathy Norem with Knox Main Street United told the commissioners Monday that there was never a marker until now.

A living piece of space exploration history will be celebrated with a fun run in Downtown Knox. On the northwest corner of the Starke County Courthouse Square is a sycamore tree, grown from a seed that orbited the Earth on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1988. Seedlings were given to each Indiana county, and Starke County’s was planted on the courthouse lawn in April of 1990.

A community effort to honor Starke County’s veterans is now “in the final stretch.” Kathy Norem is a member of the Starke County Veterans Memorial project committee. She told WKVI’s Charlie Adams last week that the stones had been set, the flagpoles had been raised, the sidewalk was being poured, and the commemorative pavers were being installed.

The City of Knox Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 27th, at 4:00 p.m. CT on the Starke County Courthouse square. Everyone is welcome!
After the tree lighting ceremony, residents are invited to the Knox Community Center where Santa will visit with children. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available.
