Starke County Election Board Finalizes Plans for This Week’s Poll Worker Training Sessions
Starke County expects to have a total of 20 first-time poll workers this Election Day. During last week’s election board meeting, board member Peg Brettin said voters will notice some younger people working the polls, “Because many of the older people either, one, don’t want to do it anymore, or two, are deceased,” she explained. “So that’s one of the reasons why you’re going to see a lot of new people out there.”

Voter registration clerks in Starke and Pulaski Counties are busy collecting absentee ballots for the November General Election.
Absentee Voting Begins in Starke, Pulaski Counties
The November General Election is three weeks away, but hundreds of local voters have already cast their ballots. Pulaski County has had 143 early ballots cast, as of Monday afternoon. Officials in the Clerk’s Office say that’s a higher number than average. Meanwhile, the Starke County Clerk’s Office says 250 people have voted in-person, along with 232 mail-in ballots.
McCray Replaces Reed in Oregon Township Board Race, As Election Preparations Continue
With just a few weeks to go before the General Election, a change has been made in the Oregon Township Board race. Joseph Reed has withdrawn his candidacy, according to Starke County Clerk Vicki Cooley. Roy McCray was appointed last week by the Republican Party chair to take Reed’s place on next month’s ballot.

Murder Trial to Begin in Starke Circuit Court Today
A man accused of murdering Knox resident Cord Colgrove in a March 3, 2017 alleged confrontation in North Judson will be in Starke Circuit Court today as a defendant in a trial that is set to take a week-and-a-half.
Starke County Election Board to Meet Today
Members of the Starke County Election Board will meet today where the members will discuss the upcoming town convention for the at-Large seats on the North Judson Town Council. The town convention will need to be scheduled sometime before Tuesday, Aug. 21 to determine candidates for the November General Election ballot.
Starke County Commissioners to Open Elevator Bids Today, Auction at Highway Garage Tomorrow
The Starke County Commissioners will open bids for the replacement of the elevator in the Starke County Courthouse today. The county was awarded a grant to conduct the work, but getting bids for the project has been a challenge.
DLZ Invoices for Starke County Elevator Project to be Sent to K-IRPC for Review
The invoices received for the engineering work for the upcoming Starke County Courthouse elevator project will be going to K-IRPC representative Shawn Cain for review. Commissioner Kathy Norem stated last week that the invoices are going to her as K-IRPC is the overseeing agency over the $500,000 grant the county received for the project. Cain will review the bills from DLZ to make sure they are acceptable according to the grant standards. Those invoices will return to the commissioners for payment. The county paid 10 percent as a match and the engineering costs will be paid for out of that match money.
No Bids Received for Starke County Courthouse Elevator Project
The Starke County Commissioners scheduled another bid opening process for the Starke County Courthouse elevator project as no bids were submitted before the deadline of Thursday, May 31.
Early Voting Continues Through Monday
Local voters have a few more chances to cast their ballots early, ahead of next week’s primary. In-person absentee voting continues today from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Starke County Courthouse in Knox. Pulaski County residents may vote today at either the Pulaski County Justice Center in Winamac or the Francesville Fire Station from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Absentee Voting Continues in Pulaski and Starke Counties
Primary Election day is just around the corner, and while some people will be venturing to the polls on May 8th, there are many people in Starke and Pulaski counties who have opted to vote early.
The Pulaski County Clerk’s Office reported that, as of Saturday afternoon, 22 ballots have been cast by mail, 35 individuals have cast ballots by travel board and 204 in-person absentee ballots have been cast.
According to the Starke County Clerk’s Office, between April 10th and April 28th, 21 ballots have been cast through the travel board, 39 mail-in ballots have been received and there were a total of 356 ballots cast by walk-ins. Continue reading
Absentee Voting Underway in Starke, Pulaski Counties
With Primary Election Day still over two weeks away, many voters are choosing to cast their ballots early. The Starke County Clerk’s Office says 177 in-person absentee ballots had been cast as of Friday afternoon. Another 31 had voted by mail and 11 by travel board. In Pulaski County, 96 people had voted in-person and 49 by mail, according to the Clerk’s Office.
Starke County Election Board Sets Early Voting Hours Ahead of May Primary
The Starke County Election Board has finalized early voting hours, ahead of the May primary. The in-person absentee voting period runs from April 10 to May 7. During that time, Starke County voters will be able to cast their ballots on the first floor of the County Courthouse in Knox weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon and from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Those hours will be extended to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 27 and Friday, May 4.

Starke County Commissioners Review Proposal for Elevator Project
The Starke County Commissioners reviewed paperwork Monday night pertaining to the construction of a new elevator at the Starke County Courthouse.
KIRPC Representative Shawn Cain presented forms that the commissioners reviewed that indicate that KIRPC is the grant administrator for the $500,000 grant received for the project. The project cost is approximately $550,560 with $35,000 in fees for KIRPC. The project is expected to be bid out in May. KIRPC is expected to oversee all financial aspects of the project and make sure all laws are followed concerning wages and reporting.
