Celebrate the Season at the Starke County Museum
The home of former Indiana Governor Henry F. Schricker is ready for the Christmas season. A “memory tree” is at the front door on the outside, and the old fashioned Christmas tree stands fully decorated the the Schricker living room.
The Starke County Museum, which is housed in the home, will be open at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec.7th. to observe the Christmas holiday. Hot cider and cookies will be served. Visitors will also have time to make a short visit to all three floors and see the exhibits of Starke County history. Continue reading
Showcase Your Collections at the Starke County Historical Society Ice Cream Social
Celebrate the Independence Day weekend with the annual Starke County Historical Society Ice Cream Social. It will take place Sunday, July 6 from 1 until 3 p.m. at the museum on Main Street in Knox. Collectors of historic items are urged to bring them along to share them with friends and neighbors. In the past, antique cars, motorcycles, trucks, tractors, fire engines, arrowheads, firearms, military vehicles, native wood turnings, fishing lures and dolls have been on display. Continue reading
Starke County Historical Society Loans Horse to Library
A special piece from the Starke County Historical Society is on loan to a local library. Fred and Judy Parker of Boca Raton, Fla., formerly of Starke County, donated a 1920s antique carousel horse to the museum a few years ago. Until recently it’s been on display at the Starke County Museum. Space there is limited, so the historical society board wanted to find a special spot to display the piece for public enjoyment. Knox City Council to Discuss Several Items in Tuesday Meeting
The Knox City Council will meet Tuesday night with a full agenda.
Prior to the 7 p.m. regular meeting, the council members will hold an executive session to discuss the fireman’s insurance benefits.
Starke County Museum Reopens after Remodeling Project
The Starke County Museum on Main Street in Knox has reopened after some remodeling. Volunteers are on hand to welcome you from noon until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The volunteers include Ron Vindel, Peg Brettin, June Golding, Mary Ann Gappa, and Randi Beem. Starke County Historian Ed Hasnerl will be on hand too on Fridays.
Ice Cream Social Draws Hundreds
The annual Starke County Museum Ice Cream Social was held yesterday. Scores of people enjoyed the refreshments, toured the museum and listened to music.
Suzi Syznalski and her daughter, Nicki Mourer, entertained those in attendance with dulcimer music.
Ice Cream Social Scheduled for Sunday
The annual summer Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social at the Starke County Museum is set for Sunday, July 3rd from 1:00-3:00 p.m. CT. Members of the Starke County Historical Society will be hosting the event.
The event provides a good opportunity to see all three floors of the museum’s exhibits and displays as well as the special exhibits on display outside in the yard.
North Judson-San Pierre 3rd Grade Class Tours Starke County Museum, Courthouse
Mrs. Ridley’s third grade class from North Judson-San Pierre Elementary School took a tour of the Starke County Museum in Knox Tuesday morning. The tours were given by Marianne Gappa, June Golding, Peg Brettin and Dan Roscka. Dan Roscka told the students about the time capsule that was opened during the County’s Sesquicentennial.
Knox Elementary Students Visit Starke County Museum
Nearly 150 Knox Elementary School third grade students visited the Starke County Museum this week to learn more of the history and the people of the area in which they live. In the annual trek to the museum at 401 South Main Street in Knox, the home of former Governor Henry F. Schricker, seven classes each spent an hour with volunteer guides and watching local history videos. Continue reading
Christmas Open House this Sunday at Starke County Museum
The members of the Starke County Historical Society are inviting the public to a Christmas Open House on Sunday, December 5th at the Starke County Museum at 401 South Main Street in Knox. Ed Hasnerl and his guests will lead the visitors in Christmas carols. The Open House is from 1:00-3:00 p.m. CT with singing at 2:00 p.m.
