Arrowhead Country RC&D Explains Grant Framework for Starke Forest Recommendation

A local conservation agency says they don’t require specialist input prior to delivering on grant fund requests.

The comments come after a recommendation by the Starke County Park Board to seek grants from Arrowhead Country RC&D. If selected, monies would be used to construct a bypass ditch across the south side of the Starke County Forest. The work aims to move water around a decades-old marsh, preventing damage to wildlife in the area.

Election Board Continues HAVA Grant Work, Prepares for Election

Primary Election2The Starke County Election Board has received approval for the first phase of grant work.

During their meeting Monday morning, board members recommended accepting the grant funds to the Starke County Commissioners. The renovations come courtesy of a Help America Vote Act grant with the funds are being used to upgrade a door, parking lot, and wheel chair ramp at the North Bend Township Community Center and polling site.

Starke Election Board Leaves Voting Hours Alone After Previous Approval

 
 

The Starke County Election Board advertised early and absentee voting hours, and then considered changing them the day before it’s supposed to start.

Following a vote at their last meeting to set the hours for voting prior to the primary election, Starke County Clerk Vicky Cooley brought a proposal to the board to reduce the number of hours early voting can take place.

Candidates running for office in Starke County could be facing fines for not filing the appropriate financial disclosure forms.

During Tuesday’s Starke County Election Commission meeting, filing CFA-4 forms was discussed as important due to laws implemented at the state level. There are three financial documents that need to be filed for a candidate to be in compliance.

Prescription Drop-offs Continue Hazard Prevention Efforts

A box sits in the lobby of the Starke County Jail that’s intended to act as a receptacle for the prescriptions. Drop-off programs are designed to protect water supplies, prevent taking expired medication, and reduce the spread of medications used as an illegal narcotic.

Starke County Ranks First In State for Meth Seizures

 
 

A new report says that while seizures of meth labs are up in Indiana, the number of labs is also up in the state.

The publication from Purdue Extension says Indiana saw nearly 1,800 meth lab seizures in 2013, the highest of any state in the country. Data supplied in the report describes the trends in illegal drug use in rural areas and proposes a few solutions to the problem.
