Starke County Commissioners to Consider Personnel Requests Tonight

starke-county-courthouseSeveral items on the agenda for tonight’s Starke County Commissioners meeting pertain to plans for 2016. Tonight’s EMS report includes a request for a pay raise for the director next year. Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler will also ask the commissioners to create new employment positions in the 2016 budget. In other personnel matters, the commissioners will also make an employment offer to a candidate for the emergency management agency director position vacated recently by Ted Bombagetti. Voter Registration Deadline is Today

 
 

If you aren’t registered to vote or have moved since the last election, you’ve got until the close of business today to take care of business. This is the deadline for voters who plan to cast ballots in the November General Election to either register or update their registration information. Continue reading

North Judson Brush Pickup Begins Monday

North Judson Water TowerThe Town of North Judson will begin fall brush pickup on Monday. Brush piles should be placed along the side of the alley before Monday morning. Residents who do not have an alley should put their piles next to the street. They should only contain brush, not trash or other debris. Leaf pickup will occur later this year.

Starke County Commissioners Settle Pending Litigation

starke-county-courthouseThe Starke County Commissioners decided to settle some pending litigation at a special meeting on Thursday night, however, the Reid Collins Tsai team will be present to make sure everything goes well.

Among the settlement agreements discussed was with former Veterans Service Officer Terry Turner. An age discrimination claim was filed with the state civil rights commission following his termination on June 15th.

The war on drugs begins at home. That’s the message a Valparaiso man whose 20-year-old daughter died of a heroin overdose in 2002 shared with a group of community members yesterday in Marshall County. Mann Spitler III became a certified prevention professional and discontinued his podiatry practice in 2006. Manna was his only child. He says she succumbed to peer pressure as a teenager and started using heroin. Spitler urges parents to take note of changes in their child’s appearance. He says bloodshot eyes, contracted or dilated pupils are signs of opiate use. Cocaine can also cause pupils to dilate. So can marijuana, but the whites of the eyes will be bloodshot as well. Deer Archery Season Opens Today

Deer hunting season is officially underway in Indiana. Today marks the start of archery season, which runs through Jan. 3, 2016. All hunters must have a license and must use legal archery equipment as defined by the DNR. These include long bows, compound bows or recurve bows and arrows. The bow must have a pull of at least 35 pounds. Arrows must be tipped with broadheads that are metal, metal-edged or napped flint; chert or obsidian. Continue reading
