The City of Knox is getting a rebate from its health insurance carrier, thanks to a provision in the Affordable Care Act. It caps the amount of premium money companies can spend on advertising, sales, salaries and promotion at 20-percent. The remaining 80 percent has to be spent on actual healthcare benefits. Final Work Scheduled on Klockner Drive Paving Project

roadworkThe final pavement work through the Knox Industrial Park should wrap up in the next few weeks. The contractor for the industrial park road improvement project is back in Knox for the next couple of days placing asphalt on Klockner Drive/300 East, Culver Road, Pacific Avenue and Hamilton Drive. All roads will remain open but will be down to one lane during the paving. Flagmen will direct traffic in the area. Continue reading

Starke County Recorder’s Office to Digitize Additional Records

starke-county-courthouseThe Starke County Recorder’s Office will use funds from user fees to make more records available online. Territory manager Greg Bachman with vendor Fidlar Technologies says a portion of records back to 1983 will be digitized. Recorder Lisa Minix eventually wants to go back farther, but opted for 1983 because title searchers often need access to records going back that far. Continue reading

Starke County Officials Name Redevelopment Commission

starke-county-courthouseStarke County once again has a populated county redevelopment commission board. The volunteer body was established by the commissioners in 2006 and set up a tax increment financing, or TIF, district near the intersection of U.S. 30 and U.S. 35 in Hamlet. It allows property tax money generated in a specific area to be recaptured for infrastructure improvements in the area. By doing so, the land becomes more attractive to other potential business and industrial tenants. The five parcels of land in the Sysco TIF district have generated $15,427.71 for the county. That money is receipted by the auditor and parked in a special account. Continue reading
