Political Action Committee Forming for N.J.-S.P. Tax Referendum

 
 

Political efforts are beginning to mobilize in the North Judson – San Pierre area.

The school corporation has authorized a referendum to appear on the November General Election ballot that would raise the property tax levy. According to officials with the school corporation, funds raised will help maintain key services without reductions in staff or cuts to student activities.

Hamlet Officials Prepare for Town Convention

 
 

Davis Township Trustee Robin Latimer appeared at the Wednesday night meeting of the Hamlet Town Board to discuss several issues including a reminder that the town’s Democrat convention will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18th in the new fire station. The convention begins at 6 p.m. Voters will choose between incumbent Ward 3 councilman Frank Lonigro Jr. and challenger Connie Bailey. No Republican has qualified for the seat, so the winner will appear on the November ballot. Continue reading

USDA Approves State’s Request for Secretarial Disaster Declaration

Crop lossFarmers throughout the state who suffered crop losses due to excessive rainfall can apply for low-interest emergency loans from the federal government. The U.S. Department of Agriculture yesterday approved a secretarial disaster declaration for 53 of Indiana’s 92 counties. Gov. Mike Pence, Lt. Gov. Sue Ellsperman and Indiana Farm Service Agency Executive Director Julia A. Wickard made the request in late July after farmers suffered significant crop damage and losses as a result of flooding and excessive rain that started May 1st. Continue reading

Former Veterans Service Officer Seeks Hearing, Reinstatement

  
 

Former Starke County Veterans Service Officer Terry Turner contends the county commissioners denied him his due process and violated his constitutional right to free speech by not allowing him to speak during a recent meeting. Turner was fired during the June 15th commissioners meeting. He filed a grievance against the commissioners for wrongful termination, claiming President Kent Danford never gave him any oral or written warning about any improper actions. Turner also asked for a list of veterans who have complained about his job performance. The commissioners conducted an executive session grievance hearing with Turner and upheld their action during their July 6th meeting, citing his status as an at-will employee. Continue reading

Judge Accepts Plea, Sentences Criminal Confinement Defendant

 The Knox man who handcuffed and shackled his wife to their coffee table while wielding a knife was sentenced to 10 years in prison, despite the victim’s protest that his punishment is too harsh. Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall accepted a plea from 37-year-old Benny Giselbach to charges of escape, criminal confinement and resisting arrest. All three stem from an April 15th incident at his Bass Lake area home. Continue reading

Knox School Board Reaffirms Support for Programs

Knox-School-Board-2014With the meeting room packed with parents, teachers, and band and athletic fans, the Knox School Board, late yesterday afternoon, assured those patrons it had no intent to “do away” with any particular extracurricular activity in its 2016 budget cutting efforts.

Social media had been reporting all day that budget support of certain programs was scheduled to be drastically reduced or completely removed from the schedule of activities at the scheduled work session.

NIPSCO Reminds Customers to Call Before Digging

Indiana_811_logo_200x100NIPSCO reminds anyone with outdoor plans that involve digging to call 811 before doing so. Officials say digging into underground lines is the biggest risk to NIPSCO’s gas system and the leading cause of damage. So-called “blind digging” damages an underground utility line every six minutes, according to Common Ground Alliance. Striking an underground line can harm you and others, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood and potentially result in fines and repair costs. Continue reading

Knox Council to Consider Establishment of New Street

The Knox City Council will convene prior to their scheduled 7 p.m. meeting at the site of a proposed new street. Steve Dodge previously asked the council to turn the alleyway next to his property at 801 Bower Street into an actual street since it is frequently used as a shortcut. Council members are meeting there at 6:30 p.m. to look at the site. Continue reading
