A flood watch is in effect for the WKVI listening area from this evening through tomorrow morning. According to the National Weather Service, widespread rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible tonight into tomorrow. State Law Provides Insight Into North Judson Grave Situation
The party carrying liability when an individual is buried in the wrong grave may be solved by the Indiana Code.
North Judson Town Council members informed Norman and Marilyn Derrickson – who own several grave plots in Highland Cemetery – that they did not plan to remove the individual who happens to be buried in a plot they currently own.
Field Set for Knox Municipal Election
The winners in May’s Knox Municipal Primary Election do not have challengers in November’s General Election contest. Officials with the Starke County Clerk’s Office did not receive any candidate filings prior to Monday’s noon deadline. Continue reading
June Rainfall Sets Record, Crop Value Losses Increase
The Indiana State Climate Office says June set a record for rainfall in the Hoosier State.
According to a press release from Purdue Extension, 9.03 inches of rainfall was received around the state. That’s higher than the previous rainfall record of 8.13 inches from June of 1958.
Starke County Commissioners Adopt Purchasing Policy
Starke County government now has a purchasing policy in place aimed at supporting local businesses and ensuring greater oversight into expenditures. The policy adopted by the commissioners Monday night prohibits departments and officials from opening any retail accounts without authorization by the commissioners granted in a regular board meeting. N.J.-S.P. School Board Moves Forward With School Funding Referendum
Though the school board typically meets on the third Tuesday of every month, the North Judson-San Pierre Board of Trustees held a special school board meeting yesterday evening in which they considered and deliberated the need for a referendum tax levy to carry out their public education duty.
This means that in November the public will be asked to either confirm or deny the implementation of a property tax rate that will not exceed forty-seven and half cents on each one hundred dollars for the purpose of funding the general operations of the North Judson-San Pierre school corporation. This maximum rate will be reviewed annually during the seven calendar years immediately following the holding of the referendum. It will never exceed higher than this approved rate but could potentially be lowered based on revenue and expenditures. Continue reading

Despite North Judson Grave Offers, Local Family Awaits Further Information
The Town of North Judson has released documents pertaining to an occupied grave that one local family says belongs to them.
Public officials began a dialogue with members of the Derrickson family after it was learned that a non-related individual had been buried in a grave plot they have owned for about 20 years in Highland Cemetery.
Filing Error Prompts Recertification of North Judson Town Ordinances
Certain residents living in North Judson could be prevented from voting in this November’s election.
During Monday’s Starke County Election Board meeting, ordinances dealing with the annexation of property developments from 2001, as well as an ordinance dealing with the establishment of Town Wards from 2012 were reviewed.

The Starke County Building Corporation expects to pay the final contractor and subcontractor invoices for construction of the new jail in September. Summer Safety – Temperatures Inside Cars Can Easily Exceed 100 Degrees
During the coming months, summer temperatures are expected to soar. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration likes to annually remind care-givers of small children to never leave a child unattended in a vehicle. They report that on a 60 degree day temperatures inside a locked car can get well above 100 degrees very quickly. On hotter days that get up into the 80s and 90s outside, temperatures in a car can be a dangerous 130 to 160 degrees within minutes. These conditions are obviously incredibly dangerous to young children who can potentially die when their bodies temperatures exceed 107 degrees. Heatstroke does not always lead to death but can also cause various other health problems such as permanent brain damage, deafness and the loss of sight. Continue reading

Terry Turner was relieved of his duties as county veterans service officer on June 15. A foundation that focuses on providing for the community has recently received quite a substantial amount of money for their dedication to the well being of the children of Starke County.
