Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested Following Manhunt

A Knox man faces several new felony charges following a Wednesday manhunt in the Bass Lake area. It started around 12:20 p.m. when the Starke County 911 center got a call from the Bass Lake Pub. The caller told the dispatcher a woman showed up there in handcuffs and shackles saying she had been held hostage and “water boarded.” The victim told deputies she lived across the street and had fled her home on foot. Bella Vita Pregnancy Resource Center Celebrates Five Years

Bella VitaThe featured speaker at the 5th annual Bella Vita Resource Center’s annual banquet was Peggy Rumer, who shared in words and music inspirational and “life changing” events in her life. She told of dealing with the birth of an unexpected baby and her new Christian life style.

The program and dinner was held at the Nancy J. Dembowski Center in downtown Knox. Speakers reported that Starke County holds the 3rd highest rate of teen pregnancies in the State of Indiana. Last year, more than 230 females and 90 males attended parenting classes at the center. Thirteen abortions were recorded by the agency in 2014 –compared to 27 in 2013.

The local pregnancy resource center is headquartered a 52 West Lake Street in Knox; the old post office building. It is a non-profit organization designed to assist those in an unplanned pregnancy situation. It is supported by donations.

The North Judson Town Council has taken a first step toward helping a grocery store chain buy Ray’s Super Foods. The Heartland Markets and R&M Wholesale team boasts more than 75 years worth of retail grocery experience, according to their corporate websites. The company recently acquired Curt’s IGA in Francesville and has signed a letter of intent to buy the store in North Judson. Continue reading

The animals at the Starke County Humane Society are the beneficiaries of an Oregon-Davis High School class project. Chemistry 2 students applied the principles of stoichiometry, which is the study of the amounts of substances involved in reactions, to baking. Continue reading

State Representative Speaking in Knox on Friday

DermodyA state legislator out of LaPorte will be addressing members of the Starke County Chamber of Commerce.

According to a newsletter from the Chamber, 20th District State Representative Tom Dermody will be speaking at a breakfast about the long-session of the General Assembly. The breakfast will be held at the Country Kettle Restaurant on Friday at 8:00 a.m. in Knox.

 

Dermody introduced legislation this session that would have allowed the Sunday sale of alcohol for carryout. That legislation was later pulled for a variety of reasons, among which was lacking support.

The Chamber is encouraging participants to ask questions of Dermody. The General Assembly will be meeting in Indianapolis until April 29th.

 

National Weather Service Cautions Against Burning

 
 

Northern Indiana is under a Red Flag Warning until 8 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. CDT this evening. That means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will develop shortly. In this case a combination of gusty wind and low relative humidity will cause any fires that develop to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Be careful when discarding cigarettes and cooking on grills as well.

Income Taxes Due Today

 
 

Federal and state income taxes are due today. Michelle Bachtel from H&R Block says you need to file an extension if you can’t finish your return. Doing so gives you six additional months to file but does not  defer payments due. If you owe, pay as much as you can. Otherwise you will be assessed interest and penalties from April 15th. Thank a Dispatcher during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

911Time is being spent this week to recognize the heroes behind all of the 911 and other resident calls at law enforcement agencies. 911 dispatchers are the first in a line of emergency personnel to talk to a person in distress about an issue whether it is medical related, an accident or another incident.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week runs until Sunday, April 19. Telecommunicators, or dispatchers, alert police, fire and EMS of calls for help. There are some medical instances where dispatchers can relay life-saving skills over the phone to help someone sustain life until emergency personnel can arrive at the scene.

Don’t Ignore Income Tax Filing Deadline

 
 

Federal and state income tax returns need to be filed tomorrow. Michelle Bachtel with H&R Block says you have options if you owe and are not able to pay. She adds the most important thing is not to panic

“If you can’t pay the full amount by April 15, just pay what as much as you can,” Bachtel said. “Even though interest will accrue on the amount owed, you’re not going to be arrested, and they’re not going to come knock on your door and seize your home.” Continue reading

Starke County Clerk’s Office Collects Several Absentee Ballots in First Week

 
 

Knox residents who plan to vote at the polling site in the Primary Municipal Election are invited to test the voting machines on Wednesday, April 15 at 10 a.m. CT in the second-floor meeting room in the Starke County Courthouse.

Clerk Vicki Cooley reminds City of Knox voters that registered voters in District 1, District 2, District 3 and District 4 may cast a ballot in the Primary Municipal Election. Voters will be at the polls on Tuesday, May 5. This year’s polling site for all districts is the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox.

Starke County Property Tax Bills Due May 11

Starke County property tax bills will be in the mail today, according to Treasurer Kasey Clark.

Property tax payments may be dropped off at the First National Bank of Monterey branches in Monterey and North Judson, 1st Source Bank in Knox, 1st Farmers Bank and Trust branches in Knox and North Judson, and Demotte State Bank in Knox. Clark asks that you include a self-addressed stamped envelope so a receipt can be mailed.

Payments are welcome Monday through Friday at the Starke County Treasurer’s office in the Starke County Annex building in Knox. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT. A drop box is also available outside the office doors.
