Railroad Crossing Repairs Cause Road Closure

INDOT recently began some rail road crossing repairs that will cause a closure impacting commuters and residents of Starke County.

Norfolk Southern Railroad Company is renewing and repairing a railroad crossing near Knox, causing the closure of State Road 8 between County Road N. 100 E. and County Road N. 200 E.

This closure will last from Monday, September 18th until Friday, September 29th. Norfolk will only be closing this section of State road 8 for railroad crossing rehabilitation. Continue reading

Chip Sealing to Close State Road 39

Road Closed SignThe Indiana Department of Transportation is chip sealing another section of highway in Starke County. Starting today, State Road 39 will be closed between State Road 10 and State Road 8. Work is due to wrap up Friday, weather permitting.

INDOT is also chip and fog sealing State Road 10 between 500 West and U.S. 421 this week. Continue reading

State Road 10 to Close for Chip Sealing

Road Closed SignState Road 10 west of North Judson will be closed this week for chip sealing, weather permitting. INDOT crews will begin chip and fog sealing operations today and conclude on Friday, Aug. 26th. The work is done to preserve the road surface. Liquid asphalt emulsion is distributed on the roadway and covered with crushed stone. Excess chips are swept from the roadway after the asphalt cures. Continue reading

Culver to Contact INDOT for SR 10 Speed Reduction

State Road 10 in Culver may see its speed limit reduced, but the change may take up to one year.

The Culver Town Council on Tuesday night considered a request from the Plan Commission to reduce the speed limit on the state highway. No specifics were introduced, but Police Chief Wayne Bean says lowering the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph may be appropriate.

Tragic Accident Claims Life of Illinois Woman

A tragic auto accident occurred Sunday afternoon at the intersection of State Road 10 and State Road 35 in Starke County. Police found that Megan Smithson, 19, of Illinois, stopped at the intersection and pulled out onto US 35 and into the path of a vehicle driven by Tony Wagner, 37, of Winamac.  Smithson was pronounced dead at the scene by Starke County Coroner, Kris Rannells.

Wagner was transported to Starke Memorial Hospital and airlifted to South Bend Memorial for leg injuries sustained in the accident.  An 18-year-old passenger in Smithson’s vehicle was also airlifted to South Bend Memorial due to injuries suffered in the accident.  The Bass Lake Fire Department and Starke County EMS assisted the Starke County Sheriff’s Department at the scene.
