State Road 8 will be closed between State Road 23 and State Road 17 Monday and Tuesday for chip seal operations. Starting today, Culver residents and commuters should be prepared for an ongoing road closure on State Road 17.
The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that State Road 17 in Marshall County will be closed between State Road 8 and State Road 10 as crews perform chip sealing operations. State Road 23 will be closed in Ober starting Monday. The Indiana Department of Transportation says railroad crossing construction will have State Road 23 closed between Starke County Roads 200 South and 225 South. They expect work to wrap up by the end of next week.
Drivers can expect a portion of State Road 8 to remain closed at least through the summer. The Indiana Department of Transportation says significant repairs are needed to the stretch of State Road 8 between U.S. 421 and State Road 39, following damage from February’s floods.
State Road 8 will be closed west of Knox for railroad crossing repairs starting Monday. The Starke County Highway Department says Norfolk Southern Railway will be working on the track structure and restoring the highway surface.
Two state roads are back open now that flood waters have receded.

Pulaski County is expected to complete over $1 million in road projects with money from the second round of Community Crossings grants. But Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff still hasn’t revealed which roads will be getting an upgrade. He says the work won’t be able to start until the spring, and he wants to wait until closer to that time before releasing details.
Shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 22nd, the Starke County Sheriff’s Department, Knox City Police, Starke County EMS, Knox Fire Department and Washington Township Fire Department responded to a traffic accident on State Road 8 near 600 East.
According to the police report, the accident involved three vehicles. The preliminary investigation indicates that a male juvenile was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am traveling east on State Road 8 when he veered across the center line, striking a full-size handicap Ford van, occupied by a male and female traveling west on SR 8. INDOT recently began some rail road crossing repairs that will cause a closure impacting commuters and residents of Starke County.
Norfolk Southern Railroad Company is renewing and repairing a railroad crossing near Knox, causing the closure of State Road 8 between County Road N. 100 E. and County Road N. 200 E.
This closure will last from Monday, September 18th until Friday, September 29th. Norfolk will only be closing this section of State road 8 for railroad crossing rehabilitation. Continue reading
A few Knox streets are closed for railroad crossing maintenance. City officials say the crossings at Shield Street, Bower Street, Portland Street, and 300 East should reopen by the end of the week.
The Indiana Department of Transportation is chip sealing another section of highway in Starke County. Starting today, State Road 39 will be closed between State Road 10 and State Road 8. Work is due to wrap up Friday, weather permitting.

More oversize loads are being routed through Knox as a result of road construction projects in LaPorte County. A superload is classified as a vehicle larger than 16 feet wide, 110 feet long, 15 feet tall or weighing more than 120,000 pounds, according to INDOT officials.
Motorists traveling between Knox and LaCrosse on State Road 8 will need to find another route for the next couple months. Continue reading
The speed limit on State Road 8 east of Knox has been lowered from 55 to 45 miles per hour in anticipation of opening the new Starke County Jail in a few months. INDOT did a quick study based on a request from local officials and agreed to reduce the speed limit out to the railroad tracks due to the increased traffic count that the jail will create. Starke County motorists can bypass Knox traffic by taking County Road 300 East/Klockner Drive from Culver Road to State Road 8. The contractor in charge of the road improvements through the Knox Industrial Park advised WKVI News last evening the intersection of Klockner Drive and Culver Road is open to traffic again in all directions. Work on the road to improve access to the Starke County Industrial Park is continuing. Starting today the intersection of Klockner Drive and Culver Road will be closed in all directions. Work on Klockner Drive/County Road 300 East to improve access to the Starke County Industrial Park is on track to wrap up before Thanksgiving. Crews will be paving the east side of Klockner from south of Pacific Avenue north to the railroad spur today. Klockner Drive is set to reopen in both directions from Pacific Avenue north to State Road 8 on Monday, Nov. 10. Local traffic will also be able to access Klockner from Pacific Avenue south to just north of Culver Road.
A major Starke County road project is substantially complete. Members of the county council and commissioners and officials from the Starke County Economic Development Commission will celebrate the reconstruction of the intersection of State Road 8 and 300 East later today. The intersection has been rebuilt to accommodate traffic to and from the Knox Industrial Park. It now features a turn lane and acceleration and deceleration lanes to help trucks more easily navigate the corner. Continue reading
