Starke County Commissioners Lower Speed Limit on State Road 8
The speed limit on State Road 8 east of Knox has been lowered from 55 to 45 miles per hour in anticipation of opening the new Starke County Jail in a few months. INDOT did a quick study based on a request from local officials and agreed to reduce the speed limit out to the railroad tracks due to the increased traffic count that the jail will create. Culver Road at Klockner Drive Scheduled to Close Today

Klockner Drive Project Nears Completion Milestone
Work on Klockner Drive/County Road 300 East to improve access to the Starke County Industrial Park is on track to wrap up before Thanksgiving. Crews will be paving the east side of Klockner from south of Pacific Avenue north to the railroad spur today. Klockner Drive is set to reopen in both directions from Pacific Avenue north to State Road 8 on Monday, Nov. 10. Local traffic will also be able to access Klockner from Pacific Avenue south to just north of Culver Road.
Starke County Officials Celebrate Completion of Road Project
A major Starke County road project is substantially complete. Members of the county council and commissioners and officials from the Starke County Economic Development Commission will celebrate the reconstruction of the intersection of State Road 8 and 300 East later today. The intersection has been rebuilt to accommodate traffic to and from the Knox Industrial Park. It now features a turn lane and acceleration and deceleration lanes to help trucks more easily navigate the corner. Continue reading

Motorists who use State Road 8 to travel west of Knox may want to find a new route for the next few weeks due to continued work to rebuild the intersection with Starke County Road 300 East. Starting Wednesday, traffic on the highway will be reduced to one lane with flagmen so the edge of the highway can be saw cut and removed to begin preparation for paving. Continue reading

Industrial Park Construction Detour Routes Announced
Motorists who need to get around the construction on State Road 8 at County Road 300 East leading to the Knox Industrial Park can take Range Road south to 50 South and back west to 300 East. That’s the official detour for the project. The intersection will be closed for about a month in order to widen the road. After it reopens work will continue in that area through November. Starke Commissioners Approve Deed for CR 300 E, SR 8 Project
The Starke County Commissioners met in a special meeting yesterday morning at 10 a.m. to approve and sign documents to allow the County Road 300 East and State Road 8 improvement project to continue. Commissioner Kent Danford and County Attorney Martin Lucas were unable to make it to the meeting, but Lucas was available via speakerphone to add his input to the discussion.
RR Crossing on State Road 8 Closed East of Knox
Drivers traveling on State Road 8 near Knox may want to plan a different route, as Norfolk Southern Railroad has temporarily closed the railroad crossing on the highway approximately 1.7 miles east of Knox. The crossing was closed early Monday morning, and officials say it will remain closed until Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
A detour is in place directing drivers from U.S. 35 to U.S. 30, then to State Road 23.
Starke County Commissioners Asked to Classify County Road as Rural Major Collector
Starke County Development Foundation Director Charles Weaver appeared before the County Commissioners at it’s most recent meeting. He asked the Board to sign an application to be submitted to the Indiana Department of Transportation to classify County Road 300 East, between Culver Road South and State Road 8 on the North, as a rural major collector.
“This makes that parcel of road eligible for eighty percent federal financing on a highway project,” said Weaver.
The major collector will link the road that will be rebuilt to state standards to service not only the industry in that area but the residents and other users as well.
