Starting today, Culver residents and commuters should be prepared for an ongoing road closure on State Road 17.
The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that State Road 17 in Marshall County will be closed between State Road 8 and State Road 10 as crews perform chip sealing operations. Hamlet’s Starke Street rehabilitation project continues. Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts says the road remains closed, as paving contractor Walsh & Kelly rebuilds it from Plymouth Street north to U.S. 30. Pitts says she doesn’t have a specific timeline for when the work will be done.
The main portion of Hamlet’s Starke Street rehabilitation project is expected to get underway in the next couple of weeks. Project engineer Lee Nagai told the town council Tuesday that he’s asked paving contractor Walsh & Kelly to wait until after this Friday to get to work. “Between school being out and whatnot, I thought it would be better,” he said. “I mean, it’s already late because of the weather, so we’ll just wait until school’s over and hopefully, they can get started either next week or the following week.”
Hamlet officials are still waiting for work to begin on the Starke Street rehabilitation project. As the first step, the town has been working with Starke County Surveyor Bill Crase to extend the culvert at Benninghoff Ditch.

Hamlet’s Starke Street rehabilitation project may require more culvert work than originally thought. Work continues to bring new industries to the Hamlet area. During the Starke County Economic Development Foundation’s monthly report to the Hamlet Town Council Wednesday, Interim Executive Director Larry Wickert said it’s usually hard to find projects for which Starke County’s sites would be suitable.

The Starke County Highway Department is continuing an effort to conduct traffic studies in order to collect data for a proposed U.S. 30 freeway that will travel through northern Starke County.
A coalition is putting together suggestions to present to INDOT that would include benefits to Starke County in a U.S. 30 freeway proposal between Valparaiso and Fort Wayne. In that stretch, the only way to get across U.S. 30 would be with an overpass, and the only way to get on will be at an interchange. Continue reading
The Hamlet Town Council is nearly ready to award quotes for over $200,000 in improvements to Starke Street. Plans call for the road to be rebuilt from Plymouth Street north to U.S. 30. The work will include drainage improvements and a new sidewalk along the west side of the road.
Potential upgrades to U.S. 30 will be discussed this evening by a group of local stakeholders. The Indiana Department of Transportation may consider upgrading the highway to freeway standards in the coming decade. Starke County has assembled a group of people who’d be impacted by the change, to come up with some recommendations for INDOT to consider.

A Carmel man was arrested Thursday, after he allegedly led police on a chase through three counties on U.S. 30. Police say it began around 1:45 p.m. in Marshall County, when a patrolman tried to pull over a car near Tulip Road.
