Senate Bill 58, if signed into law, would eliminate the Pulaski County Superior Court by January 1st, 2019. The bill would also remove certain appointment privileges in other counties. Continue reading
The Town of Winamac has issued a freeze warning for municipal utility customers. All residential and commercial water and sewer customers are recommended to leave an indoor cold water faucet running in a stream the size of a toothpick until further notice. Continue reading
20th District State Representative Tom Dermody says he is still evaluating a bill that could affect consumers in Indiana.
House Bill 1026 would allow for those with a proper permit to sell alcoholic beverages for carryout on Sundays in the state. The bill, filed this week in Indianapolis, has not been presented to Representative Dermody – who chairs the often controversial Public Policy Committee.

U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly reintroduced legislation yesterday that could redefine a section of the Affordable Care Act.
Donnelly, along with Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Arkansas, introduced language that would change the current definition of full-time employee to a 40-hour work week.

Police in Winamac can expand their living arrangements to the adjacent counties.
On Monday, the Winamac Town Board considered, and approved, a measure making the change. Previously, Winamac Police were required to live in Pulaski County. The move follows a review of the previous policy by the Board.

Clerk’s offices are accepting candidacy filings for this year’s municipal election.
The offices up for election in the Town of Winamac include clerk-treasurer, and town council seats in District 1, District 2 and District 3. The clerk-treasurer will also be elected for the towns of Francesville, Medaryville and Monterey. Three town council seats will be voted on in those three towns as well as at-large seats.
The search is ongoing to fill the vacancy for Town Manager in Winamac.
Interviews with potential candidates are anticipated to be held today. An announcement on a new Town Manager could be made during Monday night’s Winamac Town Board meeting.

5th District State Senator Ed Charbonneau offered comment on the issue of reversion reform which could result from projected revenue increases over the next two years. Reversions allow the Governor to withhold spending in the instance of an economic downturn or other revenue shortfall.

Applications for the Energy Assistance Program can still be submitted for a one-time benefit on electric and heating bills. North Central Community Action Agencies, Pulaski County Human Services, and Community Services of Starke County began taking applications for LaPorte, Pulaski and Starke residents in November. Applications will continue to be accepted until all funds are obligated.

The Winamac Town Council members approved ordinances establishing salaries and wages for town employees in 2015.
In a special meeting yesterday, the council members approved salaries and wages for town officers and employees plus the officers of the Winamac Police Department. The ordinances passed by a vote of three to one. Tom Murray was the lone member who was against the approval of the ordinances.
New York City’s latest wheelchair-accessible taxis hit the streets last week. Winamac-based BraunAbility adapted the chassis of the Nissan NV200 cargo van to accommodate a rear-entry wheelchair ramp. It folds away when not in use by a wheelchair user, so the taxis are able to be used by both disabled and non-disabled passengers. The rear-entry design also eliminates the need for wheelchair passengers to load and unload in street traffic. Continue reading
The Pulaski County Community Development Commission may apply for a state grant to provide job skills training to high school students. County economic development director Nathan P. Origer says funds are available through the Career and Technical Education Innovative Curriculum Grant program to set up industrial repair and maintenance training programs at Winamac Community and West Central High Schools. Origer says it is a really high-demand occupation in the manufacturing sector locally and regionally. Continue reading
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department is fully staffed again, with one notable exception. Cpl. Paul Grandstaff has tendered his retirement after 26 years with the department. A local soldier got a heroes welcome home last night after a six-month tour of duty in the Middle East. The Starke and Pulaski County Sheriff’s Departments and firefighters in both counties escorted Cody Foust and his mother up U.S. 35. He’s with the Indiana National Guard’s 1413th Engineer Company, 81st Troop Command. The unit spent the past several months in Afghanistan performing base-closure and retrograde operations in support of the drawdown of Operation Enduring Freedom. Continue reading

An Eastern Pulaski School Board member was honored Monday evening for 22 years of service. John Kwiatkowski is retiring from the board at the end of this year. He served two stints on the board as the representative from Franklin Township. The first was from 1968 until 1978. During that time the elementary school was built. Continue reading
The Pulaski County Human Services Food Pantry is closed until Monday, Dec. 15 in order to prepare for the holiday season. Staff and volunteers are getting ready for the annual toy store and food basket distribution this weekend. Regular food pantry hours are 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. or by appointment for people with emergencies or who are working, in school or training. Those hours will resume on Monday.
