Arson Suspected in Apartment Fire in Winamac

The Winamac Fire Department was called to two fires Monday.

Winamac Fire Chief Bill Weaver said that firefighters were called to an apartment fire at 303 N. Market Street at about 1:30 p.m. ET. They were able to get to the scene quickly and extinguish that fire. Weaver said that an investigator from the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office arrived on scene and determined that the fire started in the closet in a bedroom and that it was deliberately set. No arrests have been made yet in this arson case and the fire remains under investigation. Michael Allen Arrested after Making Alleged Threats

Michael Allen, of Winamac, was arrested on Friday, November 25th after he allegedly threatened a female victim and a police officer over the phone.

The victim was at the Starke County Sheriff’s Department making a complaint against Allen saying that he keeps calling her phone and harassing her. While she was talking to the Jail Deputy, the phone rang and the victim said it was Allen calling. The Jail Deputy answered the phone and identified himself as an employee of the Sheriff’s Department and Allen continued to speak to the jail deputy using vulgar language and threatening the life of the jail deputy. The victim then spoke with a police officer who explained the situation. The phone rang again and the officer answered, identified himself and Allen allegedly swore and threatened the life of the victim and her family. He threatened the officer when he called her phone again. The officer called him from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and asked if he could speak with Michael Allen and he said that he wasn’t there, but he sounded just like the suspect. The officer asked for his address and he gave it to him, but when police arrived at the residence, he was gone.

Daniel Whited Sentenced in U.S. District Court

Daniel Whited of Winamac was sentenced last week in U.S. District Court. Judge Jon DeGuilio sentenced him to 78 months imprisonment and four years of supervised release after pleading guilty to Possession with the Intent to Distribute Marijuana.

Daniel Whited was arrested last year after being sought by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and all federal law enforcement entities for operating a marijuana growing operation in Pulaski County at 6573 W. 500 S. Officers located marijuana plants inside and outside the residence with an estimated street value of $610,000. Officers also found processed marijuana ready for packing, sale and distribution with an estimated street value of over $3 million.

Winamac Man Arrested after Public Intoxication Incident, Officer Threatened

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department arrested Paul Rausch, of Winamac, after he allegedly threatened a police officer, on Sunday.

Officers were called to 1550 S. 50 E. in reference to an intoxicated person. The man, Paul Rausch, was reportedly laying in the parking lot at Poblano’s Restaurant. After talking to witnesses, Rausch had fallen face first onto the pavement prior to the officers’ arrival.

Pulaski County Recycling Center Reports Increase in Revenue

Ed Clark of the Pulaski County Recycling Center appeared before the Pulaski County Commissioners Monday for his monthly report with some good news: the Recycling Center has brought in $32,344 this month so far—more than doubling the income from October. Find drop off locations on the Recycling Center Near Me website.

Clark says this trend is going to continue.

“Pulaski County Recycling and Transfer Station has brought back to the county $284,000 to date. We will do better. My goal is to get over $300,000. We’ll make that,” said Clark.

Street and Highway Departments Gearing up for Winter Weather

The thought of snow is certainly not appealing, but the thought that the County Highway Departments and the City Street Departments are ready for the snow is very appealing.

The Starke County Highway Department told us that they’re ready for winter weather. The salt shed is full with road salt and sand and the snow plows have been serviced and ready to tackle the roads.

Plans Made to Expand Safe Routes to School in Winamac

The Winamac Town Board, Safe Routes to School Task Force and Friends of the Panhandle Pathway are getting together to make the Panhandle Trail accessible to the residents of Winamac.

A plan is in the works to extend the Panhandle Pathway north to Winamac, connecting to Superior Street. This will allow the Pathway to connect to the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation. It will be paved with stone and later paved with asphalt. This will be a safe route to school for children and it will also be a safe walking and bike route for everyone.

Sewer Separation Project in Winamac Nearly Complete

The sewer separation project is nearing an end in the Town of Winamac.

Clerk-Treasurer Judy Heater told us that three-quarters of the paving is done and all streets affected with the project should be finished today. The Town’s fall paving schedule was combined with the project’s paving schedule so more could be done and the work is being handled by E&B Paving and Central Paving. Heater said the businesses have been very cooperative during this long process.

Jennifer Wallace Arrested on Theft Charges

Jennifer A. Wallace was recently arrested by police from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department on charges of Theft.

According to court documents, an investigation showed that Wallace allegedly stole tanning product inventory and cash from Ladybug Laundry and Tan in Winamac. She allegedly took cash from the moneychanger. She was an employee at the time of her arrest.

Pulaski County Prosecutor Stacey Mrak and the State of Indiana has filed two counts of Theft as a Class D Felony against Wallace. She has since bonded out of the Pulaski County Jail.

Starke County and Pulaski County Election Results

The Municipal Election results from Starke County show that it was a breakthrough for the Republicans in the Democrat stronghold of North Judson and a new City Councilman in Knox was elected.

In the most thrilling race of the night, Republican Donna Henry defeated Incumbent Democrat Connie Miller for the North Judson Town Clerk-Treasurer position with a vote of 221 to 217. Henry waged a vigorous door-to-door campaign, visiting many of the homes numerous times. She was asked what did it for her.

The Singing Hoosiers show choir will perform in concert in Winamac at 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 13th at the Winamac Community High School Socialtorium. Several Winamac High School singers are, or have been, a member of this choir. The Singing Hoosiers have a 60 year history and the group has appeared with such legendary entertainers as Bob Hope, Alan Sherman, Red Buttons, Tony Bennett, Duke Ellington, and Indiana’s favorite son Hoagy Charmichael.

The Winamac High School Drama Department will present the comedy CONDITIONS tonight and tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET in the Winamac High School Socialtorium.

CONDITIONS is a comedy where Grandma Wallobee’s grandson and her secretary may inherit $10 million of her estate each, only if they agree to be married. Complications arise as the housekeeper threatens to quit her job over not receiving the inheritance, the secretary’s boyfriend wants to propose to her, add an obsessive roommate and a greedy granddaughter who tries to manipulate her way into the inheritance.

Winamac Teenager Arrested on 10 Counts of Credit Card Fraud

Winamac teenager was arrested by North Judson police after reportedly charging items on a credit card without the owner’s knowledge.

Nick Rudd, 18, allegedly took a credit card belonging to James Dolezal from his unlocked pick-up truck and bought items from gas stations and eateries that totaled approximately $158.00 from purchases made over a two-day period. Rudd told officers that he was given that card to use.

Absentee Voting Count low in Pulaski County

Absentee voting in Pulaski County is slow but it is available to you if you need to utilize that way of voting.

Clerk Tasha Foerg told WKVI that about 12 people have voted absentee so far. Only a handful of contested races will appear on the ballot. Those races include the Winamac Clerk-Treasurer, Francesville Clerk-Treasurer, and Town Council races in Francesville and Medaryville.

Two Winamac Residents Arrested after Traffic Stop, Attempted Escape Incident

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department arrested two after a traffic stop and one tried to escape police custody after being admitted to the hospital after being tased.

Early Sunday morning, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on State Road 119 in Winamac but the driver of the vehicle refused to stop and was traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver eventually drove into a driveway on Washington Street and the driver and the passenger were ordered out of the vehicle. When officers conducted a search, they allegedly found bath salts in Adam Koske’s possession. The driver, James Penicaro, was allegedly found to be intoxicated.

Winamac Man Arrested after Stolen Items Found in Residence

Jason Creque, of Winamac, was arrested Tuesday in Pulaski County on Theft charges after a search warrant was executed by Pulaski County police.

An ATV, hunting clothing, household items, toys, and tools were reported stolen by a homeowner on 475 W., south of 900 S. in Pulaski County. When Pulaski County officers investigated the shooting incident between Creque and Josh Isom on October 5th, detectives observed the stolen items at Creque’s residence at 7948 S. 475 W. in Winamac. Detectives obtained a search warrant and some of the stolen items were recovered at the residence. The ATV was recovered in Carroll County and some of the hunting items were recovered in Monticello.
