A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the WKVI listening area through 7 a.m. EST/6 a.m. CST. A combination of light and blowing and drifting snow will make travel difficult to impossible, and some unplowed roads are likely impassable. Motorists should only travel in an emergency. If you do venture out, be sure to take a flashlight, extra food and water, a shovel, blankets, jumper cables, a cell phone charger and sand or kitty litter to use for traction should you become stuck.
Snow is expected to continue throughout the Kankakee Valley this morning before tapering off later today. It started out as rain overnight, and temperatures dropped below freezing, so roads may be slippery. Remember, ice and snow, take it slow. If you go out, give yourself plenty of travel time, leave ample space between vehicles and avoid having to slam on your brakes. Starke County is still under a yellow-level travel advisory, which means routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas. The same is in effect in Porter County. Otherwise, there are not any travel restrictions in effect for other area counties. Should that change we will let you know. The winter storm watch is in effect until 4 this afternoon. Continue reading
The Winter Storm Watch for the WKVI listening area has been upgraded to a warning by the National Weather Service. Heavy snow and blowing and drifting are expected this afternoon into tomorrow morning, with total accumulations of between 6 and 10 inches expected by midday Wednesday. North winds will cause considerable blowing and drifting, primarily on east to west roads. This will make travel dangerous. Motorists are advised to only venture out in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. It’s also a good idea to take blankets, a snow shovel, kitty litter to use for traction should you get stuck and enough warm clothes to walk a mile should that be necessary. As always, the WKVI Information Center will be staffed to bring you the very latest on this severe weather.
