Today is the final day of Winter Weather Preparedness Week.
Readiness extends beyond being safe in your own home so the Indiana Department of Homeland Security has a few helpful vehicle tips to keep in mind as road conditions become more dangerous with incoming inclement weather.
First, be sure to have your vehicles looked over by a mechanic before the cold weather hits. The mechanic should check the brakes, heater, defroster, tires, windshield wipers and any other parts they may be susceptible to issues in the winter-time. INDOT Readies for Winter

The Indiana Department of Transportation started preparing for the upcoming winter season soon after the last of the snow and ice melted last spring. This is Winter Weather Preparedness Week
This week has been designated as Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana.
Winter does not officially arrive until Dec. 21 and although snow has arrived in parts of Northern Indiana this season it’s never too late to craft an emergency plan.
Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery suggests that you stay informed about potential severe weather. If snow begins to fall in the area, slow down if you plan on driving. Give yourself plenty of extra travel time to reach your destination.
Winter Weather Preparedness Week Demonstration at INDOT Plymouth Site
This week is Winter Weather Preparedness Week and to gain a better perspective of what it’s like for a snow plow driver during a snow event, Indiana Department of Transportation officials invited members of the media to hitch a ride with driver Dave Pennington to get a snowbird’s eye view of the process.
WKVI’s Anita Goodan rode in the snow plow and even though reporters were offered a chance to drive in an obstacle course at the Plymouth Sub-district, she opted not to challenge the state’s insurance policy. However she did talk to six-year snow plow driver, Dave Pennington, while in the snow plow about what challenges he faces while out on a route.
Nov. 17-23 is Winter Weather Preparedness Week
While we’ve already experienced snow this season, this week is Winter Weather Preparedness Week.
Indiana Department of Transportation officials want you to be safe on the roads and they’re going to do their best in keeping you safe on the roads. Their top priority is snow and ice removal of state highways and workers use all available resources to keep roads open.

We are approaching the winter season and this week has been designated as Winter Weather Preparedness Week.
Being prepared for cold, snow, freezing rain, sleet and ice will help minimize the impact this winter could have.
Most winter-related deaths are the result of car accidents in snow events. When snow is forecast or is happening in the area, pay attention to road condition reports and allow extra time to get to your destination. Slow down and exercise caution.
