Plymouth Common Council Approves Tax Abatement for American Container

The Marshall County Economic Development Corporation assisted American Containers in obtaining a tax abatement for an expansion project.

According to Derek Speir from the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation, the city of Plymouth Common Council recently approved that request.

“They are purchasing approximately $3 million in new manufacturing equipment. We assisted them in applying through the city of Plymouth, through the common council, in receiving a ten-year tax abatement for that investment,” explained Speir.

The expansion will include a 50,000 to 55,000 square foot addition and members of the economic development commission will help them in applying for a real property tax abatement later down the road.

“The total investment in the project is going to be about $5.5 to $6 million. As a result of that, they’re looking to hire approximately six new people.”

American Containers is located just east of Lowe’s in Plymouth and features unique products at the facility.

“They make packaging material for the window and door industry. A lot of the clients they have are Home Depot, Lowe’s and the Masonite Corporation. Some of the manufacturing equipment and some new printing equipment will be utilized to actually capture a new contract from Home Depot, from what I understand.”

Speir added that this is a positive step for the city of Plymouth as well as Marshall County.

“It’s a new investment in the company that’s been established here. Their roots date back in Plymouth in the 1960s. They are deep roots. It continues to grow and investment in the city.”

The outdoor expansion project should begin in the spring.
