U.S. 35 Bridge Opens to Traffic

The U.S. 35 bridge is now open!

Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Deitchley notified WKVI Tuesday that the bridge was open to traffic. The last part of the project which included finishing the final surface of the roadway, lane striping and median work was completed in the past few days.

The bridge was expected to be open prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, but the weather played a big part in the delay.

Three major bridge projects were in full swing during the construction season. In addition to the U.S. 35 bridge, the U.S. 6 bridge near Kingsford Heights was torn out and rebuilt while the town of Monterey rejoiced in a new bridge. A brand new bridge was constructed next to the old historic bridge that had become too dangerous for commuters. Both of those bridges did open close to their scheduled dates of completion.

INDOT crews removed the road closed signs on the U.S. 35 bridge Tuesday afternoon and the bridge and the roadway are now open to travelers.
