Bicyclist Killed in LaPorte County Crash

A bicyclist was killed late Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle in LaPorte County. It happened around 11:40 p.m. on U.S. 20 just east of the Porter/LaPorte County Line, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies believe the 50-year-old man was riding his bike eastbound on U.S. 20 when he was hit from behind by a 2007 Audi passenger vehicle. Officers say there were no lights on the bicycle and the rider wasn’t wearing any reflective clothing, while riding in a particularly dark area with no streetlights. Investigators determined that the impact happened in the left lane, with the bicyclist ending up in the center turn lane.

He wasn’t breathing and had no pulse when emergency responders arrived. The bicyclist was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City and pronounced dead a short time later.

Investigators believe that speed was not a factor in the crash and say the driver of the vehicle tested negative for alcohol. They say the incident remains under investigation. The names of those involved have not yet been released.

Michigan City Police, LaPorte County EMS, Coolspring Township firefighters, and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office assisted LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputies.
