Students at New Prairie High School have planned a vigil tonight for a classmate who died Monday after playing basketball in the gym.
Officials with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department say 17-year-old Mark Mayfield was taken by ambulance to LaPorte Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by an emergency room physician. He had been a student at New Prairie High School since the middle of his freshman year.
An autopsy found no known cause for his death, so the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office is waiting on results of toxicology testing. They could take a week.
Tonight’s vigil will take place at the school’s baseball field at 6 p.m.
