Culver-Union Township Fire Chief Terry Wakefield is looking for more volunteer firefighters.
He made a plea to the Culver Town Council last week after receiving a resignation from one firefighter. Wakefield said he’s received three applications for volunteer firefighters in two years. There are currently 18 firefighters.
He said there is a lot of training and commitment involved in being a firefighter, but it makes a difference in the community. The county usually pays for training from orientation on though hands-on applications. Wakefield was quick to say that his volunteers are one of the highest paid compared to other department when they respond to fires.
Those who are 18 years of age and older and who are township residents can apply to be a firefighter.
Over the past year, Wakefield noted that there has been $2 million in damages in fires in the community.
