Pulaski County Jail to House Federal Inmates

Housing out-of-county prisoners continues to pay off for Pulaski County.

Sheriff Jeff Richwine told the county commissioners Monday the Pulaski County Jail will soon be housing federal inmates. “These would be from Allen County, and the good thing about those is that they pay more than the state does or anybody else,” he explained. “They also pay any transportation fees, all that. So we filled out the application for that today, and they seem to be real excited. It could be 10 to 20 additional people that we could house for a fee.”

Meanwhile, Pulaski County is still housing 19 inmates for other counties around the state. An inspector from the U.S. Marshals Service was scheduled to visit the jail this week to make sure it meets federal standards.

During Monday’s meeting, Richwine also gave the commissioners an update on his department’s reserve program. “We had five officers that passed a 40-hour pre-basic and are now riding with the full-time deputies for a total of 238 hours. I’m real excited about that,” he said. “They look like a good bunch that if we need a deputy sometime, they’d be a good pool to start with.”

In other business Monday, the commissioners approved a contract between the Pulaski County Assessor’s Office and Midwest Presort.
