Preschool children attending Knox schools will have a safer bus ride.
The Knox Community School Board approved the purchase of two mini buses that have seats with lap belts and shoulder harnesses. The state will require this proper safety equipment in buses transporting preschool children beginning in January 2018, according to Transportation Director Mark Jensen.
The school uses five buses that are equipped with seats with just a lap belt to transport those children. He suggested buying new mini buses already equipped with the required safety equipment rather than spending money on equipping older buses that need to be replaced.
Not only will the mini buses be used to transport preschool students, the buses can be used to transport any student to any sporting or extra curricular events.
The buses will cost just under $100,000 and two buses will be traded in to help with cost.
With the school board’s approval, Jensen said the buses will be delivered in December.
