NIPSCO Officials Stress Severe Weather Preparedness

Now that summer appears to be here to stay, NIPSCO officials remind customers to prepare for possible severe weather.

Get a storm preparedness kit together before inclement weather strikes. It should include essential medicines, nonperishable food, water, flashlights, a fully-charged cell phone, portable radio and extra batteries. Make prior arrangements for a backup power supply if someone in your family requires life support equipment.

Customers can also sign up for NIPSCO Alerts for up-to-date information, including power outage status updates and should save NIPSCO’s 24-hour customer service line 1-800-4-NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726) as an emergency phone number.

Strong winds and tree damage are the most common cause of summer power outages. Residents are urged to periodically inspect the trees in their landscapes and correct obvious problems. However, do not try to prune trees that are close to power lines. Contact NIPSCO for assistance. Their crews are also stepping up tree trimming around power lines during the summer season.

If a storm hits, stay clear of any fallen power lines, report them to the police and call NIPSCO’s 24-hour customer service line at 1-800-4-NIPSCO.

Power outages should be reported by texting the word “out” to 444111. Customers will receive a response confirming your address and contact information. Information can also be reported online at NIPSCO.com, via mobile device at m.nipsco.com or by telephone at 1-800-4-NIPSCO.

Monitor local radio and television stations for the latest information about storms, and visit NIPSCO.com/Out for current information on the status of power outages and estimated restoration times.
