The Pulaski County Council continues working on the county’s salary matrix. Recently, a question has come up about whether pay raises based on longevity should take effect in January or on the actual anniversary date of when that employee was hired.
County officials have learned that the county’s payroll software would be capable of implementing the increases on the anniversary date. Council member Linda Powers told the rest of the council last week that option would be preferable from a legal standpoint. “[County Attorney] Kevin [Tankersley] said the policy committee and their stuff that they handle is based on a calendar year,” Powers explained. “Our stuff should be based on anniversary date because it’s individual and it could be done in the computer. It’s one of the reasons we got that system.”
But Council President Jay Sullivan was concerned that would require the county to amend its salary ordinance every time an employee got a raise. Powers thought that since that’s specified in the matrix, changing the individual amounts in the salary ordinance wouldn’t be necessary, but she agreed to double check with Tankersley.
