Starke County Park Board representative Carolla Heilstedt appeared before the Starke County Commissioners last week requesting support for the proposed Yellow River Access Site project.
The project involves the construction of an access site including a gravel lane and parking area, an EZ dock kayak launch and dock. The site would be constructed on North Range Road, northwest of Knox. According to Heilstedt, the parcel is owned by Starke County and deeded exclusively for river access.
She is seeking Place Building Investment Fund grant assistance from the Indiana Office of Tourism Development and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
Heilstedt asked the commissioners for an in-kind or cash support for the county’s grant match of $21,338.
The commissioners approved a cash commitment of $10,669.90, which is half of the amount of the grant match, with an in-kind contribution worth $9,700. The in-kind contribution will be provided by the Starke County Highway Department in offering labor for the project including excavating, grading and prepping the site. The county will commit to those terms plus a letter of support provided the Starke County Park Board is successful in obtaining the Place Building Investment Fund grant.
