Road work is planned in La Porte County next week to increase safety on U.S. 20.
Indiana Department of Transportation crews will install rumble strips on U.S. 20 between U.S. 35 and the U.S. 20 and State Road 2 intersection. Officials say engineers found a way to use equipment and resources from a nearby project on State Road 39 to install this safety enhancement on the heavily traveled highway.
A resurfacing project planned for 2018 was set to install centerline rumble strips in this area. Now that portion of the project is done a year early. The project also entails constructing a turn lane at County Road 400 W.
INDOT says centerline rumble strips are an effective way to alert drivers of unsafe lane movement. The vibration can grab the attention of the driver so corrective actions can take place. Officials say rumble strips have been shown to reduce run-off and head-on fatality crashes by as much as 44%.
In order to install this safety measure, INDOT will have lane closures in place on U.S. 20 between U.S. 35 and State Road 2 beginning Tuesday, Aug. 29 through Wednesday, Aug. 30. Motorists should expect minor delays. Allow extra driving time for trips in this area. INDOT crews urge motorists to pay close attention to message boards, signs and cones in the work zone and obey the posted speed limit.
