A La Porte City Police officer was injured in a one vehicle accident after assisting in an investigation of a fatal accident.
Police say Officer Trent Mamazza helped clear the scene where a bicyclist rode into the path of a semi truck on J Street at the intersection of 6th Street. The bicyclist was taken to La Porte Hospital and pronounced dead.
The road had been closed so police could conduct a thorough investigation. Officer Mamazza was in his police vehicle on his way to inform a state highway employee that the road could be reopened when police say he encountered an object in the roadway. He swerved to miss the object and struck a utility pole, according to the report.
Officer Mamazza was taken to La Porte Hospital for treatment of injuries to his head and arm. He was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital and later released in stable condition.
The La Porte City Police Department was assisted by the La Porte Fire Department and La Porte County EMS.
