Starke/Pulaski Habitat for Humanity is making progress on its Knox home building project. Volunteers are helping to build a house at the corner of Prettyman and Delaware streets for Hope McIntire and her 5-year-old daughter Raelynn.
Executive Director Steve Morrison says he hopes to be able to start working on floor joists in the next couple weeks. “We’re getting the foundation set and poured, and NIPSCO will be here this week and put in the electric service. So we’ll be ready to start,” he says.
When that’s done, volunteers will be needed to help with the work. “Once we have announced when we’re going to start, basically they just show up on the day we start at a time, and we have some forms they will need to complete and fill out, and we’ll give them a hammer,” Morrison says. He expects the home to be complete in about two to four months, with volunteers working Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Morrison says the project has been getting a great deal of support from the Starke County Young Professionals group. Members helped paint the project job trailer. Morrison says they have also been keeping everyone informed through Facebook and email.
